I was hesitant to leave a review, as I'm so woefully ignorant of the sewing arts and the black magics of how sewing machines work; but then I thought my inexperience might help others out, so here goes. Despite having a family who sewed, and many friends who made costumes for Ren Faire and comic/ gaming conventions, no amount of begging or pleading has ever gotten one of these lousy #%&!'s to teach me how to use a sewing machine. However, as is wont from time to time (and especially for one who engages in crafting of all sorts), I have found myself in need of joining two pieces of fabric together, preferably in a manner that doesn't look like a sugar-high child with a glue-stick did the affixing. Therefore, at three different times in my life, I've determined to learn how to operate one of these machines, or die trying (or, well... go naked trying!) First was a cheap Singer I bought new some 20-years ago. I don't recall much about it, or the model number... again, 20 years ago... except that I could never get it to work. And by "work" I mean I never managed to even get a straight stitch on scrap fabric. The machine was fine, as a friend made a gloriously beautiful cloak on it for me, but I couldn't get the hang of it. The second time was two years ago, when I borrowed another friend's Bernini that was so old, the user's manual read like those "Good Housekeeping" articles we all laugh and make fun of now, complete with women wearing pearls and heels while sewing. That time I managed to complete a couple of small projects, though not very cleanly and not without breaking dozens of needles. Third time's a charm! I bought this Singer 4423 because, once again, I found myself needing to merge nylon straps together, and there was no other option. So emboldened by my success with the old Bernini, I took the plunge... and am really glad I did! Again, I must warn you, I'm not doing anything fancy, so far just straight stitching straps together... but this machine has been a breeze to set up and operate. The quick start guide had me spooled up and sewing within minutes of taking it out of the box. Threading the machine is incredibly easy for idiots like me because each step is numbered ON THE MACHINE!!! Never once had to refer back to the owner's manual when changing thread! Three tries on some tiny nylon straps to figure out where my tension needed to be set, and I was off and running after that. If people didn't know any better, it actually looked like I knew what I was doing! The one common complaint that had me worried before ordering was that people complained that the pedal was too sensitive. Well, again, I've only ever used two machines other than this one, but the pedal sensitivity and speed on the 4423 is no different than either of those older machines. I don't think anybody who learned on an older machine will have any problems here. (Am I saying that if I can modulate speed just fine, then others can too? Yes, yes I am). I am pleased with this machine. Very idiot-proof, durable enough that I spent today sewing strap after strap, and never once broke a needle or snapped a thread. Did what I asked of it, and now I'm more confident in seeing what else I can learn and get it to do.

Sure the outside is mostly plastic but then that's how stuff is made these days. But underneath that plastic is a nice metal frame. It is a sturdy unit. I've had my 4423 for a month now and I'm completely happy with it. I also have a 1938 Singer model 221 that I love but it is a straight stitch only machine and doesn't have a free arm feature. The 221 has a little more power than the 4423 but for a modern machine it would be tough to find a better one for this price, with all the stitch features and button holer. After much research I think that the people that report sewing problems with this machine may be using the wrong bobbin. Only use the type 15 plastic bobbin. Metal bobbins may cause early bobbin case failure and 15 J will sooner or later cause a massive jam-up or incomplete stitches. Read the owner manual, watch the videos on YouTube if you have problems, maybe even before you get the machine. There is a lot of good info out there that will help you avoid trouble. The needle threader works very nicely and I really appreciate that since my near vision isn't so good anymore. The bobbin winder works well and threading the the bobbin is a snap, see the drawing in the user guide. It will sew with a double needle too but it works best if you don't run the second thread thru the thread guide just above the needle. Yes the feed dogs don't raise immediately when you move the switch back to normal but as soon as the machine completes one stitch cycle the dogs pop right up and feed normally. It's not a problem, just the way it is. People have complained about the built in light, I don't know about how it was but the new machines have an led lamp and it is bright enough to sew in a darkened room. Yes the wire to the foot pedal is too short but now I can splice in an extra couple feet of wire to lengthen it. The foot pedal is very controllable and the machine WILL start and run slowly. I sew in stocking feet or barefoot, always have. I have better control that way. The 4423 has replaced my model 1937 Kenmore portable which was a free arm zig zag machine. The 4423 is more powerful than that Kenmore although it is not much smaller but it is much, much lighter. I was tired of dragging that old boat anchor around and that was the primary reason for buying the Singer. I think it is quieter than the Kenmore too. I had considered a fancier electronic machine but I've been in electronics repair for a long time and finally decided that it would be a bad choice. Nothing like a nice LCD panel to tell you what you should already know. Expensive electronic equipment will break down for the dumbest of reasons so it stands to reason that cheap electronics wouldn't be any better. Not to mention the repair costs, if even possible. So a nice mechanical machine was my choice and I really like this little Singer. My sewing these days is mainly repairs and mods. I don't know if mine will sew leather or multiple plies of denim and it doesn't concern me much cuz it does what I need it to do very well. Oh, by the way, all the important accessories are in the "secret compartment" in the removable free arm piece. And the "cover" is a just crappy piece of gray paper in a plastic bag. I cover mine with an old T shirt, it works just fine and actually looks better than the included cover.

Great. Basic, strong, keeps working. Powerful. But no seam guide! Get the magnetic one.

first time sew'er. I'd like to try my hand at leather luggage is my end goal. can't justify an industrial machine. did some test pieces of two 10 oz veg tanned with a 'heavy duty' 110/18 needle and #69 nylon thread and it did ok. the thread broke, but I think that was due to me not having a 'leather needle'. the machine did not bog down nor complain with sounds of death. to the contrary, I was impressed on how it zipped through the leather. just got my 120/19 'leather' needles in so it should go even better now. teaching myself to sew via the internet and backpacking/BoB/ gear projects. using 1.1oz ripstop nylon 110/18 'heavy duty' needle #69 bonded nylon thread 1" polypro web/strap made a couple dozen stuff sacks w/ 1" webing from 6" to 4' including gather pulls. made a dozen compression straps. this machine has gone through it all without an issue of any kind. I'm impressed for such an inexpensive machine that many talk bad about on the internet, because it's a 'singer and they don't make their own stuff'. sure it might not last, but it's paid for itself in saving over store bought gear already and I get to sew it the way I want it. I got it off 'amazon warehouse deals'. I've ordered my leather sides 10oz chrome/veg/ tanned hides. once I get some more practice in, I'll update this review on how this machine does on long term heavy leather sewing. for us beginners wanting to do thick webbing/backpacking/ gear, I can highly recommend this singer heavy duty. update oct 1, 2017: still going strong. No issues. Just sowed my wife's blue jeans and it had no problems sewing through 2 layers denim(waist top seam) and through the belt loop top attache point. Something like 6-8 layers of denim ? used 110 denim needle, #69 cotton levi / gold thread.

Purchased to hem many large curtains. Worked well for this project, and I can see that it'll will be strong enough to handle tougher materials as well. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase, but there are serious flaws in material quality and safety features--noted below. Pros ==== - Easy to use once you figure it out. - The light is good and bright (but see below). - Fast! Cons ==== - Cheap foot pedal is made of plastic and is so light-weight that the far too short power cord causes the pedal to float off the floor. The most irritating thing about using this machine was blindly hunting with my foot for the floating pedal while trying to watch to needle. I plan to mount the pedal onto a wooden board to keep it anchored on the floor--guitar pedal style. - Many parts once made of metal in better days are now cheap plastic, including the thread spool post (which seems designed to break) and the bobbins (one of which arrived broken and rattling around in the box). - The entire housing is made of brittle plastic. Because the internals are (still) metal, the unit is heavy. This means if it's dropped from more than a ½ inch or so, the case will very likely crack. Mine arrived slightly chipped at one spot from rough handling during delivery. Not bad enough to return, but that was a solid (or should I say less-than-solid) early warning that this machine is designed to break. - The carrying handle works fine, and although it too is made of plastic it seems strong enough for the purpose. But when you lift the handle to carry, it pulls on the thread. This then throws off the thread alignment at the needle. Moral: Don't use the handle to reposition while you work. - The directions that come in the box are useless. They point you to a website to download complete directions, which were incomplete and also useless. Don't waste the printer ink. YouTube videos gave me the missing information. - The directions say to turn off the power when rethreading the needle. Makes great sense, but Singer chose to save $0.49 or so by eliminated a power switch for the light. This means when you turn off the power, the work area is plunged into darkness! Be prepared to drag over an additional light or risk seriously injuring your fingers. I've been erring on side of risking my fingers, but I've has a few close calls. Thinking of adding a second power switch for the light. After all, the case is just cheap plastic. It shouldn't be hard to drill a hole for the switch and route wires for the light through it.

I bought this machine because I needed something that will handle heavy duty fabric such as denim, and also has just enough bells and whistles for the sewing that I want to do. So far, I am really liking the machine although it was difficult to understand some of the instruction in the manual. I read through the book and started trying it out. I liked the idea of the self threading needle. I was unsuccessful the first day that I got the machine, so I went to Youtube and watched some videos on how to do it. Somehow I was missing something and the needle wasn't threading. The next day, I tried again and also reread the instruction and looked at You Tube again. This time I realized that there was supposed be a small hook that should have gone into the eye of the needle, but just couldn't find the little hook. So I tried again without success, then looked for the hook at more of an angle instead of straight on and could see a little tiny hook. From there, I realized that sometimes the tiny hook would not go into the needle hole, but on the outside of the needle. I just moved it around and could see the little hook through the needle hole. From there, I had no problem. I also had a little trouble with with the buttonholer, but found that I have to set each of the dials for making the buttonhole. on the stitch dial, be sure to select the buttonhole; on the stitchlength dial, select the buttonhole located between 1 and 0 stitchlength; on the top of the machine select "6" for the stitchwidth. Once I did all three of these things I had no problem. Don't forget to pull down the buttonhole tab. Makes great buttonholes. Please remember that in most cases, there may be something done if the machine doesn't sew properly. For example, If the machine isn't threaded properly, you will get looping and jamming on the underside of the fabric. If it isn't the machine top threading, you should check to see if the bobbin is threaded properly of that the bobbin is turning counterclockwise. Also it helps to keep the beginning thread toward the back of the back of the machine bed, pulled toward the right. Just check these things one at a time until the machine stitches properly. Hope this helps. I did make a fleecy pillow case, and it worked well (my old machine didn't handle layer too well). The price was wonderful!!! I am really looking forward to using this machine, and yes, I will do some denim, to. My son wants me to take up some jeans (hope it handles the waistband and beltloop layers. My husband wants me to repair some worn spots on his work jeans (that should be easy). May also so some quilting. Before I ordered, the price through Amazon market was around $134. I would have had free shipping and tax added around $137. The next day I found that the price had dropped to $124 +tax and free shipping. The confirmation email said to expect it to be delivered between 12/19 and 12/21. When I tracked it, it said I would get it on 12/13...really fast delivery. This was my go-to workhorse for 25 years, now they are garbage. I have been extremely loyal to Singer, and these machines in particular. I sew professionally for my business. I have been using the Singer Heavy Duty machines since the beginning. I appreciated the speed and simplicity of these machines. I only use these machines for straight stitching with a twin needle. I know how to trouble shoot problems when they occur. I'm a pro, especially on these machines. I use these machines for about 10 hours per week. That isn't excessive. I properly oil and clean them, replace needles often, know how to spot a bad bobbin or bobin casing, use high quality thread, and fully understand how to adjust tension. I am a master at using twin needles. These machines would usually last me about a year, then when they start giving me problems, I simply donated and replaced them. They aren't expensive, so it is more cost effective to replace them than service them. I loved their SPEED. They are fast. But after a week, they are noisey. I can deal with that. I have already purchased two Singer Heavy Duty machines in the last 2 months. The first one was garbage. It constantly gave me problems, so I quickly returned it and bought another. The second machine is no better, it is also garbage. Thread constantly breaks and nests under the fabric, and needles keep breaking. These are the exact same problems I had with the machine I just returned. Experienced sewists may say, "Hey, you're using twin needles! That's the problem! They are always problematic". I'll respond by saying I have been doing this for 25 years on these machines with minimal issues. SOMETHING HAS CHANGED. Having one bad machine could have been a fluke. Two in a row in less than two months? That's a sign that Singer QUALITY has drastically gone downhill. Yesterday, I finally got to the point where I couldn't do ANYTHING with this machine. I changed the bobin casing, needle, and carefully wound a new bobbin with NEW thread. There was no dust, lint, or loose threads in the machine. The needle wasn't bent or dull. I could find absolutely no reason for the problems I was having... the same as with the last machine. These machines simply don't seem to have the quality that the prior Singer Heavy Duty machines had. I can't afford down-time, and I wasted the entire day trying to sort this issue out, without success. So I decided to just switch to a different brand and had a new machine delivered today so I can get back to work. I'm not leaving this comment to plug another brand. I'm just trying to show how frustrated I am that the quality of the machines has degreaded so much over the last year. After some research I decided on a Necchi machine. I wanted to keep the cost down because I do consider these types of machines to be semi-disposable after a year or so, and I wanted the same sewing speed. It arrived today and it works PERFECTLY on a straight stitch with a twin needle. I used it for two hours without the slightest hiccup. I am also AMAZED at how much quieter it is than the Singers! To compare the noise difference, the Singer is a baby crying in the middle of the night and waking me up from a deep slumber, while the Necchi is like a baby cooing in the middle of the afternoon. The Necchi isn't quite as fast as the Singer although the both claim 1100 spm. Only time will tell how well it holds up. But, so far I'm pleased. In a nutshell, these Singer Heavy Duty machines are not your "granny's Singers". Singer was always my go-to choice, but now they have serious quality control issues. I'm not sure I could go back to Singer again.

AMO esta máquina de coser. Es mi primera máquina y cubre perfecto mis necesidades. Además el color es hermoso. Ya he hecho varias cositas, principalmente arreglar ropa que me queda a muy grande.

Après avoir lu les commentaires sur la Singer 4423, mes attentes étaient hautes.. et bien après l'avoir essayé, c'est encore mieux que ce que je pensais! Ceci étant dit, ce n'est que la troisième machine à coudre que j'utilise et je suis loin d'être un grand couturier! Je me contente de faire mes bas de pantalons, réparer la fourche de mon linge de travail ou encore mettre des "patchs" aux genoux des pantalons de mon petit garçon. Donc avec ceci en tête, je trouve que l'enfilage de la machine est extrêmement facile, des numéros sont inscrits avec des flèches pour nous indiquer ou passer le fil et l’enfileur pour l'aiguille fonctionne très bien! De plus on voit que la bobine de fil est à l'horizontale sur le dessus de la machine, mais il y a aussi un adaptateur qui permet d'en mettre une autre à la verticale un peu plus à droite. Je suis capable d'utiliser une plus grosse bobine conique (une pour surjeteuse) dans l’emplacement horizontal et ça fonctionne quand même bien. Une autre particularité super utile de cette machine est le genre de base/tiroir qu’on peut retirer afin d’avoir un plateau étroit permettant d’insérer une manche de chandail ou un petit pantalon d’enfant par exemple. Ça s’enlève et se remet super facilement et ça permet de faire des coutures à des endroits que je ne pouvais tout simplement pas avant. La machine de façon générale est surprenament légère même si le cadre intérieur est en métal. Finalement j’ai découvert qu’il y a une application disponible pour appareils mobiles; c’est 100 fois mieux que la belle-mère!! 😊 Il y a toutes les instructions de base pour la machine, mais aussi une section où l’on sélectionne le type de tissu qu’on veut coudre, le type de couture désirée et l’application nous dit quels sont les accessoires et réglages requis pour y arriver! On y voit même un petit vidéo nous montrant comment faire.. Donc pour les gens peu expérimentés comme moi, c’est super utile! Pour les moins, le levier du pied est en plastique, je ne vois pas « sous le capot », mais je suppose que c’est le cas pour d’autres pièces aussi; on verra sur le long terme si c’est durable. Donc en résumé je suis très satisfait de la facilité, versatilité et puissance de cette machine et la recommande sans hésitation!
