I have only had the machine a week, but I know what quality is. I read as many reviews as possible before any purchase - anything over $30 I do that anyway. The multi-lingual "document" that arrives with the machine really isn't much help, for the beginner or the experienced. Other than repeat warnings to not leave it plugged in when not in use, it is mainly safety stuff. (Keep your fingers away from the needle! Simple and basic) The threading diagram and bobbin winding diagrams were a help, but the threading pathways are labeled on the machine. I have almost 50 years of experience with Singer and other sewing machines so I did not need much tutoring. A troubleshooting guide, like what came with my last machine would have been nice, but really its easier to YouTube how-to and the troubleshooting anyway. I was glad to read INTHE REVIEWS that the type of bobbin that this model 4423 takes- a clear plastic class 15 bobbin. NOT 15J, only class 15. Not metal. The machine came with one bobbin as the top thread and one inserted properly in the bobbin case, plus 2 spare. Be sure to check the stitch width and other settings before you start. Use zero for the width (mine was set at 4, don't use that) The center little indicator for the other 2 dials is best left alone (tension, etc) at the midpoint that is indicated by a TINY arrow. When you do sew, just like some other machines, hang onto your thread ends as you begin to sew, particularly if you are starting at a corner. If the threads get balled up under there, it's a mess. My mother's 1970's Singer machine used to do the same thing. It becomes a balled-up mess under there. It sews over thick seams like blue jeans have and does well. I did break a needle already- but I was replacing the zipper in my jeans and it was the last set of tack stitches at the bottom. I have only ONCE successfully sewn across in that area without breaking the needle, so no news there. Last piece of advice- practice on scraps so you can get a feel for using the foot pedal first! That thing is lightweight, and sensitive too. 0 to 60 in a leap! This is my 4th machine in 40 years, but I sew a lot and mend a lot. (Not made like they used to be made, but nothing is.) Nice touch to include a lightweight dust cover, and the right tools. I rate it overall 4.5 stars.

I just purchased this Singer 4423 Heavy Duty sewing machine and have only had it for a couple of days. I will use it for doing simple repairs on clothing. I'm a 67 year old man and have never used a sewing machine before, so I can only attest to the machine being easy to setup and operate. I did have some problems with the bobbin thread balling up in its compartment, but that was due to bad thread. Once I purchased good quality thread that problem was solved. The instructions that shipped with the machine were pretty sparse, but I downloaded the manual from Singer's website, plus several videos on YouTube that detailed the proper maintenance and operation of this particular model sewing machine. Only time will tell if this machine holds up over the next few years. My best advice is to experiment, be patient, read the manual thoroughly and take advantage of the many resources available on the internet for this machine! Update --- Since receiving this sewing machine I have sewn nylon webbing, leather and other thick fabrics!! I just repaired a cellphone case and this machine went through two thin layers of leather and a cardboard insert! I just love this sewing machine and hope it holds up for a few years!! UPDATE: 08/09/2021 Well, I've had this Singer 4423 sewing machine for a few months now and still love it! As I previously mentioned, I'm a novice when it comes to sewing!! Since my initial review, I have sewn several pot holders, aprons and have now completed 3 Hawaiian shirts, 1 work shirt and am currently working on 2 western shirts! I must admit I have experienced many of the problems other users have complained about, but these were solved by simply taking the time to read the manual and doing a little research on the internet. This is a simple and reliable machine and if you take the time to do your homework it will serve you well though many projects!! Update 02/13/2023: I've had this little Singer 4423 HD for almost 2 years now and can't say enough good things about it. I have sewn everything from quilting cotton, to denim and even some light leather with this machine and it has never let me down. I believe this machine is the best unit at its price point! Update 10/06/2024: Well, I've had this machine now for almost 4 years. I can't say enough good things about this Singer 4323HD sewing machine. I've run both light and heavy fabrics and materials, the latest being heavy Cordura, through this machine and it has given me perfect stitches every time! I must admit however, that I'm pretty anal about cleaning and properly maintaining my equipment. This little machine just keeps performing beyond my expectations for its price point!!

I was hesitant to leave a review, as I'm so woefully ignorant of the sewing arts and the black magics of how sewing machines work; but then I thought my inexperience might help others out, so here goes. Despite having a family who sewed, and many friends who made costumes for Ren Faire and comic/ gaming conventions, no amount of begging or pleading has ever gotten one of these lousy #%&!'s to teach me how to use a sewing machine. However, as is wont from time to time (and especially for one who engages in crafting of all sorts), I have found myself in need of joining two pieces of fabric together, preferably in a manner that doesn't look like a sugar-high child with a glue-stick did the affixing. Therefore, at three different times in my life, I've determined to learn how to operate one of these machines, or die trying (or, well... go naked trying!) First was a cheap Singer I bought new some 20-years ago. I don't recall much about it, or the model number... again, 20 years ago... except that I could never get it to work. And by "work" I mean I never managed to even get a straight stitch on scrap fabric. The machine was fine, as a friend made a gloriously beautiful cloak on it for me, but I couldn't get the hang of it. The second time was two years ago, when I borrowed another friend's Bernini that was so old, the user's manual read like those "Good Housekeeping" articles we all laugh and make fun of now, complete with women wearing pearls and heels while sewing. That time I managed to complete a couple of small projects, though not very cleanly and not without breaking dozens of needles. Third time's a charm! I bought this Singer 4423 because, once again, I found myself needing to merge nylon straps together, and there was no other option. So emboldened by my success with the old Bernini, I took the plunge... and am really glad I did! Again, I must warn you, I'm not doing anything fancy, so far just straight stitching straps together... but this machine has been a breeze to set up and operate. The quick start guide had me spooled up and sewing within minutes of taking it out of the box. Threading the machine is incredibly easy for idiots like me because each step is numbered ON THE MACHINE!!! Never once had to refer back to the owner's manual when changing thread! Three tries on some tiny nylon straps to figure out where my tension needed to be set, and I was off and running after that. If people didn't know any better, it actually looked like I knew what I was doing! The one common complaint that had me worried before ordering was that people complained that the pedal was too sensitive. Well, again, I've only ever used two machines other than this one, but the pedal sensitivity and speed on the 4423 is no different than either of those older machines. I don't think anybody who learned on an older machine will have any problems here. (Am I saying that if I can modulate speed just fine, then others can too? Yes, yes I am). I am pleased with this machine. Very idiot-proof, durable enough that I spent today sewing strap after strap, and never once broke a needle or snapped a thread. Did what I asked of it, and now I'm more confident in seeing what else I can learn and get it to do.

Purchased to hem many large curtains. Worked well for this project, and I can see that it'll will be strong enough to handle tougher materials as well. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase, but there are serious flaws in material quality and safety features--noted below. Pros ==== - Easy to use once you figure it out. - The light is good and bright (but see below). - Fast! Cons ==== - Cheap foot pedal is made of plastic and is so light-weight that the far too short power cord causes the pedal to float off the floor. The most irritating thing about using this machine was blindly hunting with my foot for the floating pedal while trying to watch to needle. I plan to mount the pedal onto a wooden board to keep it anchored on the floor--guitar pedal style. - Many parts once made of metal in better days are now cheap plastic, including the thread spool post (which seems designed to break) and the bobbins (one of which arrived broken and rattling around in the box). - The entire housing is made of brittle plastic. Because the internals are (still) metal, the unit is heavy. This means if it's dropped from more than a ½ inch or so, the case will very likely crack. Mine arrived slightly chipped at one spot from rough handling during delivery. Not bad enough to return, but that was a solid (or should I say less-than-solid) early warning that this machine is designed to break. - The carrying handle works fine, and although it too is made of plastic it seems strong enough for the purpose. But when you lift the handle to carry, it pulls on the thread. This then throws off the thread alignment at the needle. Moral: Don't use the handle to reposition while you work. - The directions that come in the box are useless. They point you to a website to download complete directions, which were incomplete and also useless. Don't waste the printer ink. YouTube videos gave me the missing information. - The directions say to turn off the power when rethreading the needle. Makes great sense, but Singer chose to save $0.49 or so by eliminated a power switch for the light. This means when you turn off the power, the work area is plunged into darkness! Be prepared to drag over an additional light or risk seriously injuring your fingers. I've been erring on side of risking my fingers, but I've has a few close calls. Thinking of adding a second power switch for the light. After all, the case is just cheap plastic. It shouldn't be hard to drill a hole for the switch and route wires for the light through it.

I bought this machine because I needed something that will handle heavy duty fabric such as denim, and also has just enough bells and whistles for the sewing that I want to do. So far, I am really liking the machine although it was difficult to understand some of the instruction in the manual. I read through the book and started trying it out. I liked the idea of the self threading needle. I was unsuccessful the first day that I got the machine, so I went to Youtube and watched some videos on how to do it. Somehow I was missing something and the needle wasn't threading. The next day, I tried again and also reread the instruction and looked at You Tube again. This time I realized that there was supposed be a small hook that should have gone into the eye of the needle, but just couldn't find the little hook. So I tried again without success, then looked for the hook at more of an angle instead of straight on and could see a little tiny hook. From there, I realized that sometimes the tiny hook would not go into the needle hole, but on the outside of the needle. I just moved it around and could see the little hook through the needle hole. From there, I had no problem. I also had a little trouble with with the buttonholer, but found that I have to set each of the dials for making the buttonhole. on the stitch dial, be sure to select the buttonhole; on the stitchlength dial, select the buttonhole located between 1 and 0 stitchlength; on the top of the machine select "6" for the stitchwidth. Once I did all three of these things I had no problem. Don't forget to pull down the buttonhole tab. Makes great buttonholes. Please remember that in most cases, there may be something done if the machine doesn't sew properly. For example, If the machine isn't threaded properly, you will get looping and jamming on the underside of the fabric. If it isn't the machine top threading, you should check to see if the bobbin is threaded properly of that the bobbin is turning counterclockwise. Also it helps to keep the beginning thread toward the back of the back of the machine bed, pulled toward the right. Just check these things one at a time until the machine stitches properly. Hope this helps. I did make a fleecy pillow case, and it worked well (my old machine didn't handle layer too well). The price was wonderful!!! I am really looking forward to using this machine, and yes, I will do some denim, to. My son wants me to take up some jeans (hope it handles the waistband and beltloop layers. My husband wants me to repair some worn spots on his work jeans (that should be easy). May also so some quilting. Before I ordered, the price through Amazon market was around $134. I would have had free shipping and tax added around $137. The next day I found that the price had dropped to $124 +tax and free shipping. The confirmation email said to expect it to be delivered between 12/19 and 12/21. When I tracked it, it said I would get it on 12/13...really fast delivery. I have had a second hand machine for years that never worked properly, the tensions couldn't be balanced, the speed was difficult to control. I learned how to sew on my mother's Singer and I longed to get one for myself, but back then sewing machines were more expensive and I didn't sew enough to justify it. I sewed less after fighting with mine for so long. Plus my mother had eventually replaced hers with another brand with a lot of fancy stitches. She used it for a couple of years but began to sew less as it started giving her a lot of trouble. She eventually dug out her 30+ year old Singer and began sewing again. I read several of the reviews of a few machines and I was convinced that getting a Singer was still what I wanted for several reasons. One is that Singer machines' thread tensions are more reliable. Many other machines have the thread go from spool to needle through no more than 4 catches. This Singer and most others I've seen have 7. Similarly the bobbin thread is held better as well. This keeps thread control and tension more consistent. I read some reviews for this machine saying they had problems straight out of the box or after only a short time. It makes me wonder 2 things - whether they changed settings like tensions before starting to sew on a scrap to get used to the machine or whether they purchased from a marketplace seller. The first thing I did was to thread the machine with standard thread and leave all settings as is (I wasn't going to need to anyway unless I didn't like where they were set after using it) then I ran a scrap through the machine to see how it felt. What a dream! It was quiet, it was easy to control the speed (it didn't jump from 0 to 60 like other non-Singers I've used), and the stitches were beautiful. The thread tensions were perfectly balanced. After practicing with it a little I began my project and was off and running without having to stop and unsnarl thread or struggle with thread tensions that wouldn't stay set. I can't understand how much trouble some people seemed to be having. One thing I mention here, I purchased the 4423 because I wanted a machine that could handle heavy fabrics, and had a variety of stitches for basic products. I didn't need 100 types of stitches or a computer for a sewing machine. I am fine with the basics. If I decide to put someone's name on a project, I'll embroider it by hand. I don't do all that much sewing any more. I do really wish I had replaced my hunk-o-junk 20 years ago right after my sister-in-law traded me for the machine I had inherited from her mother - it didn't work all to well either but she didn't like her 'new' machine. I found out why. I also wonder whether some people who wrote bad reviews purchased their machines from the marketplace. I have purchased some items from there when needed, but I and others have had problems with using them. Primarily in their definition of the word "new". If someone returns an item within the 30 days or whatever and claims it is in new condition some sellers don't check the contents to confirm. Instead they sell it to the next person. So blankets arrive not factory packaged and with obvious stains on them. The purchaser returned it because they didn't like something about it, hadn't broken it but had definitely taken it out of the box and used it. Why the seller didn't examine the blanket to be assured it was in new condition I can't say. But I say buyer beware if they buy from the marketplace and not from Amazon. Some marketplace sellers sell their own products so don't fall under this category, others are just retailers shipping through Amazon. Some aren't very professional. Don't blame the product without first being sure that you didn't purchase one of these "new" products that had actually been a return that should have been marked "like new". And don't twiddle with it before seeing how it performs straight out of the box! All I can say is I LOVE this machine. It works almost exactly as my mom's old Singer. Singer has kept to the old adage that if it ain't broke don't fix it. Their basic machines are virtually unchanged from one's produced 50+ years ago. Oh they look different, but that's just like putting on a new dress, the person in the dress is the same. Sure they have the more advanced machines, ones they pioneered. But even those are built on top of the old reliable machine. If you have a problem that is a defect, find out right away and get a replacement. Don't wait on any purchase, sewing machine or other items, to try it out to see if it is in working order then blame Singer for not replacing it. Every company can produce a defective product that made it through quality control. It is up to the buyer to do their own checking to be sure they got a product in full working order. These sewing machines now are so much less expensive that even if you do get one that breaks down, purchasing a new one does not burn a hole in your wallet. 20 years ago some of the machines I looked at would have cost $1000! Be happy you aren't shelling that out and getting the junk I've been using that cost $850! And it is just as basic as the one I just purchased! And a word for beginners - yes there is a manuel and yes it's easy to learn on. Even without the manuel someone with minimal experience can easily see how the different features work. They are clearly labeled. Anyone having problems has never used a Singer or other machine that isn't complicated to use. They look for complexity where there is simplicity. I have only had this machine a short time, but I can say that even if it starts giving me some trouble, it would have to literally break to be as bad as what I've been using. I wish I had talked my mother into giving me her old Singer! But I feel as if I just did. The color is different, but it's the same machine.

ANOTHER UPDATE!! Just now got around to unboxing the repaired machine after 2 years and 2 moves. It worked for an hour. One blasted hour. Same old timing issue. Same blargy mangle of thread from the bobbin side. I hate this machine so much. Its beyond hate. I don't have a word for how I feel about it. I don't even want to give it away at this point. Why encourage false hope in someone just trying to save a buck? I think I'm going to do what I should have done two years ago. Bring out the sledgehammer and have a good time. But you know good and well one of the metal parts is going to fly up and hit me in the eye. If so, I'll update again. UPDATE! I mailed this machine to my closest Singer repair shop. It was $20 for prepaid USPS shipping. The postman came to my door to pick it up. Which was pretty cool. I knew this was a timing issue and that's what I told the repair guy. I should have asked him if that was something covered under the 90 day warranty. Because even though I told him I bought it last January, I suppose I should have then said, "So this timing thing...that's covered under the warranty, right?" But I didn't. So my bad. If your machine is having the kind of trouble I describe below, please be aware that if you've had it longer than 90 days, its pretty much going to be on you to fix it. In the end I had two choices. Have him mail it back to me at a charge of $25 without being fixed, or pay $60 plus the $25 to have it fixed. At first I was all "Just mail it back to me. I'll use it for stress relief as I go all Office Space on it in my back yard." He had obviously not seen that movie classic, so my attempt at humor was lost on him. Anyway, he convinced me to have it repaired and I AM SO MAD. But that will get me nowhere. I'll update when I have it back and we'll see how many weeks of sewing I get out of it. If its less than 12, I'll post pics somewhere of my OS reenactment. I loved this machine when I first bought it. So much so that I bought my mom one shortly thereafter. It was SO fast. And seemed really sturdy and awesome. Everything worked like it should and I just had a few gripes here and there. The light wasn't really bright enough. The detachable storage/swing arm seemed cheap compared to the rest of it. The instruction manual was lousy, but I've come to expect that in sewingland. All was well until I started to hem a pair of jeans. Not heavy duty, farmhand kind of jeans. Very thin denim without any heavy seams. I used a denim needle and did everything right. The machine just stopped right in the middle. And I realized that my bottom thread was completely a jumble. Quick check on Google told me that my tension was off. OK. Well I watched the video on how to thread for correct tension. Check. Watched another video about other causes of bad tension. Check. Of course it didn't change anything. Other than hemming these jeans, I was in the middle of sewing my wedding dress. Yeah. Bad timing Singer. So I stole my mom's machine from her house. Still in the box. I got about an hour's worth of work from that one. Same thing happened. Completely stopped with the jumbled up bottom thread. So now what do I have to do? If I want a warranty repair, I have to pay to send these machines to be fixed. If it is determined that the repairs are warranty repairs then Singer will graciously pay to send them back. I guess if they aren't warranty repairs they'll hold them hostage? Anyway, I was planning on these machines being around a long time. I had been using a Janome Sew Mini (the BEST beginner machine ever made) before I got the first Heavy Duty and you know what? I'm back to using it with zero problems at all. It even hemmed three pairs of men's jeans last night with nary a hiccup. And it got me through my wedding dress, believe it or not. So if you're a novice (I'm not, just cheap) and you're thinking this machine might be the right fit for you because its not electronic and its "heavy duty," please think again. One broken machine? OK. Bad luck. Two broken machines? No way is that OK.

AMO esta máquina de coser. Es mi primera máquina y cubre perfecto mis necesidades. Además el color es hermoso. Ya he hecho varias cositas, principalmente arreglar ropa que me queda a muy grande.

Après avoir lu les commentaires sur la Singer 4423, mes attentes étaient hautes.. et bien après l'avoir essayé, c'est encore mieux que ce que je pensais! Ceci étant dit, ce n'est que la troisième machine à coudre que j'utilise et je suis loin d'être un grand couturier! Je me contente de faire mes bas de pantalons, réparer la fourche de mon linge de travail ou encore mettre des "patchs" aux genoux des pantalons de mon petit garçon. Donc avec ceci en tête, je trouve que l'enfilage de la machine est extrêmement facile, des numéros sont inscrits avec des flèches pour nous indiquer ou passer le fil et l’enfileur pour l'aiguille fonctionne très bien! De plus on voit que la bobine de fil est à l'horizontale sur le dessus de la machine, mais il y a aussi un adaptateur qui permet d'en mettre une autre à la verticale un peu plus à droite. Je suis capable d'utiliser une plus grosse bobine conique (une pour surjeteuse) dans l’emplacement horizontal et ça fonctionne quand même bien. Une autre particularité super utile de cette machine est le genre de base/tiroir qu’on peut retirer afin d’avoir un plateau étroit permettant d’insérer une manche de chandail ou un petit pantalon d’enfant par exemple. Ça s’enlève et se remet super facilement et ça permet de faire des coutures à des endroits que je ne pouvais tout simplement pas avant. La machine de façon générale est surprenament légère même si le cadre intérieur est en métal. Finalement j’ai découvert qu’il y a une application disponible pour appareils mobiles; c’est 100 fois mieux que la belle-mère!! 😊 Il y a toutes les instructions de base pour la machine, mais aussi une section où l’on sélectionne le type de tissu qu’on veut coudre, le type de couture désirée et l’application nous dit quels sont les accessoires et réglages requis pour y arriver! On y voit même un petit vidéo nous montrant comment faire.. Donc pour les gens peu expérimentés comme moi, c’est super utile! Pour les moins, le levier du pied est en plastique, je ne vois pas « sous le capot », mais je suppose que c’est le cas pour d’autres pièces aussi; on verra sur le long terme si c’est durable. Donc en résumé je suis très satisfait de la facilité, versatilité et puissance de cette machine et la recommande sans hésitation!
