The handle is made of a dense plastic (yellow) with a grip portion covered with a softer rubber-like plastic (black) which is tightly bonded to the handle. All together, these measures definitely help absorb impacts very well. To a degree, this a personal thing, but for me, I didn't have any issues using it on an anvil shaping hot metal. Regardless of what you do though, I would highly recommend wearing work gloves as well.
