Chevy Chase's greatest achievemtn is Fletch
Chevy Chase quickly became the star of Saturday Night Live when it first aired and left it to pursue a career on the big screen. He only made a few memorable films afterward but his greatest achievement was Fletch. Chase plays a journalist investigating the drug trade in Los Angeles. He is great with his one liners and sarcasm like when a doctor asks if his fake name was similar to a children’s book about elephants. Chase replies he doesn’t have any. The doctor asks if he means kids, and he says no elephant books. It’s just fun to watch him good off.

Understand the Jokes Now
The investigative reporter may irritate his editor, but he constantly produces good work for the newspaper. When his next story involves a heroin trade on the beach, he disguises himself as a homeless man. Unaware of Fletch's true identity, a businessman offers him $50,000 to kill him. Fletch is captivated by the offer and attempts to learn more about it.The plot veers all over the place, but Chase's performance and a variety of strange and amusing circumstances propel it beyond some technically challenging areas. This film isn't simply about bizarre disguises and aliases. At its core, the film is a fantastic mystery thriller. Many of the gags in this film were lost on me when it was initially released, but now, years later, I understand them and have that ah-ha moment. This film depicts a once-great comic at the pinnacle of his career.

"...put it on the Underhills' bill..."
For my money, Fletch is the best film Chevy Chase ever made. I can pop it in my player almost any time and still find the movie just as funny, no matter how many times I've seen it. And yet, the film is too often dismissed as just another dated piece of 1980s pop-culture. Or worse, it is deemed the sole highlight of Chase's career that subsequently went downhill over the years. So why does Fletch continue to inspire such a strong and loyal following after almost 20 years? Insanely quotable dialogue, a colorful assortment of character actors and, of course, Chevy Chase's inimitable, vintage smart-aleck mode.Chase shows a stellar range of physical comedy in this movie. His technique ranges from broader displays, such as the dream sequence when he imagines himself as the unusually aggressive L.A. Lakers star power forward, to more subtle bits such as when he bangs his nose into a door, posing as the accident-prone Mr. Poon.Capitalizing on the immensely popular action comedy, Beverly Hills Cop, Fletch adheres to the same formula: the maverick protagonist who has a problem with authority, the use of multiple disguises to get in and out of dicey situations for comedic effect, the obligatory car chase, and even the hopelessly dated synth-soundtrack by Harold Faltermeyer. Fletch deviates in one significant aspect: Chase's character never uses a gun (he also repeatedly gets the bejeezus kicked out of him).Fletch is essentially a vehicle tailor-made for Chevy Chase. It plays to Chase's strengths; in addition to his affinity for physical comedy, the movie is famous for showcasing his trademark deadpan delivery of dialogue and his knack for playing a wide variety of characters - abilities he perfected on Saturday Night Live. Chase expertly juggles Fletch's numerous aliases. From the likes of the absent-minded, Dr. Rosenrosen to Mr. Underhill's country club "friend," John Cocktosten, Chase makes each one distinctive and hilariously memorable.Another aspect of Fletch that makes it so memorable is the strong supporting cast. The film features character actors like Joe Don Baker as the slimy Chief of Police Karlin (who brings a wonderfully scary intensity to his role), George Wendt as the amiable drug dealer Fat Sam, Tim Matheson as the double-dealing bigamist Alan Stanwyk, M. Emmet Walsh as the probing Dr. Dolan, and a young, pre-Thelma and Louise Geena Davis as Larry, Fletch's ever loyal co-worker. One of the joys of the movie is how Chase interacts with all these people and how they react to his flippant, off-handed remarks. Watch him in action in the hospital sequence as he confuses and befuddles the staff in order to get the information he wants -- it's not only what he says to them but, more importantly, how he delivers the dialogue that makes it so funny.More so than in any other film, Fletch is classic Chevy Chase. While he's in exceptional form in Caddyshack and National Lampoon's Vacation, they don't showcase his unique talents as befittingly as Fletch. In every scene, Chase does a fantastic job carrying the picture.

Light Hearted but Enjoyable with Decent Plot
Cornelius Crane "Chevy" Chase (Yeah, I'd change my name to 'Chevy", too--besides 'Chevy Chase' is, also, a country club in Maryland for the rich folks and that fit with the times when he became famous). Anyway, I had seen this movie when it first came out in the theaters back in the day. Chevy Chase manages to be funny with dry wit without falling into the vulgar sex slurs of the 1980's movies of the same genre (think "Shrimp on the Barbie" with Marin Cheech). His movies were all simple but interesting. This one had a pretty good plot. I watched it again, all these decades later, and had forgotten the plot, so it was like seeing it for the first time. I enjoyed it. It isn't laugh out loud funny, so don't expect that. You appreciate the character he plays and how that character sees what he started on to the end. Starts out where he is the beach looking like a beach bum but he is really a reporter trying to get a story about drugs on the beach. However, one man who sees him mistakes him for a real beach bum and hires him to commit murder. The man wants Chevy's character to murder him. The man says he is dying of cancer and wants his insurance policy (which won't pay for suicides) to pay out the full amount to his wife. Murder should do the trick and make his wife the money she will need to live on. The man is fairly young and does not appear in ill health. This story seems more interesting to Chevy than drugs on the beach so, in addition to the 'Drugs on the Beach' story, he digs into this man's background to see if anything he said to him was true, after he goes along with the man and agrees to murder him. The sleuthing is interesting and Chevy makes the movie fun by his constant disregard for social norms without making the movie seem silly. It is a light hearted, engaging flick with a decent plot for this genre of the times. Despite the clothes and hairdos being typical of the '80's, it is as easily enjoyable today as it was back in the day.
