Review: The Good Husband; Lessons in and laughter about marriage - I gave "How To Be a Good Husband," (from the Bodleian Library, Oxford University) to dear friends who were engaged to be married soon. The book has a decidedly dated British attitude and humor. It is well-dressed counsel about some of the issues that come up even in modern marriage, camouflaged in great British-style humor. My friends spent an evening together reading and laughing, as I had when I read it. At the same time, I had given them the companion book, "How To Be a Good Wife." Not all of the advice in both books, of course, applied to my American friends living in the 21st Century. Nonetheless, they found both books enchanting and entertaining. And the books provoked some serious discussion about their impending marriage. The benefit was not just humor. I recommend these books in general, and especially for the engaged-to-be-married, the already-married and any reader with an interest in early 20th Century British manners in marriage. I can see how far we've come, especially for women.
