Bought these strips to prove it's sewer gas because the wife became skeptical after a couple weeks of damage - perhaps there's a drip or a dead animal. The strips showed nothing and I dipped them in distilled water just like Rufus told me to. Dangled them in the air in various places... nothing. I decided to run the camera one last time and there I saw the crack in the vent pipe on the inside corner of a 90. Turned out, it was about 3 inches from one of these test strips that didn't react. The problem was, I hadn't taken out enough drywall to see it. So, the rest of these are going into the trash. Amusing. There are many types of sulfur compounds. These will give you a positive or negative result for H2S when used properly.
