Camel Crazy: A Quest for Miracles in the Mysterious World of Camels

I thoroughly enjoyed Christian Adams' first book, and so was excited to find out she had just published Camel Crazy. Adams' prose is artful, but it is also always in service of the story it is telling, so for me this book read more like a novel I couldn't put down than a nonfiction exploration of camels. We get that information, of course, and Adams does a great job of making it interesting in its own right; however, the book is also a great story about Adams, about discovery, about new possibility and new hope. Adams does well what John McPhee does well--she takes a subject that, on the surface, might seem like a topic that you had little interest in, and she invests it with life and shows you the whole interesting world going on beneath the surface. Reading this book reminded me of the first time, years ago, that I read John McPhee's Oranges. Except for eating them, I had never given oranges a second thought, and before reading Adams book, camels were, well, just camels to me. But now I know better. I highly recommend this book.

What an amazing book about a mother's quest to help her son! The author quickly grabs your attention with the numerous global "milk focused missions" to save her son. There's also a hint of supportive assist from her husband. I enjoyed this book while on holiday and I would recommend you add it to your list.

I dove into this book the minute it arrived, and found in short order that this was the full version of the story I'd been told only in abstract. I literally did not put the book down until I was halfway through and crashed at bedtime with the book on my chest and glasses still on. It was fascinating to read about people I know and people who I've only "met" on Facebook, and all the stories of Christina's adventures in learning about camels and the healing properties of their milk. The brilliantly depicted events half a world away and the loving description of these magnificent beasts' grounded, placid energy made the narrative as tangible as if I was experiencing it. This is the story that nearly a year ago prompted me to seek my own healing through camel milk, and being able to read all the rest of this journey that will touch many lives was a profound gift. The material is handled with scientific competence yet remains easily relatable to the reader, and the purely practical index of camel milk sources at the end is exactly what I would have asked for. Camels brought about change for Christina and her son, they brought about change for me, and they and Christina's beautifully written book will bring about change for many others.

This book starts slowly but is informative with an index as to how to find merchants selling camels milk.

Camel Crazy is a surprising page-turning, enjoyable read. Ms Adams weaves storytelling with real world knowledge, expertise and pure grit to find answers for her son with autism. Undaunted by the prospect of being a "pioneer", Adams demonstrates that a determined parent can lead the way for others...and make a legacy of difference. Great resources listed make the next steps of accessing and proper use of camel products very helpful.

This quickly become one of my favorite books. I study the neuroscience of Autism Spectrum Disorders and also immunology. I do believe that this young boy may have suffered from some autoimmune disorder. Camel's milk does contain some anti-inflammatory molecules. Aside from the science, I love the cultural aspect of this book.

First thing first: I read the above 9 reviews, all of them five stars. I notice that some of reader mention that they are " fortunate to receive an Advance Reader Copy". I am not one of those people. I have type I diabetes, and read some papers online suggest that the camel milk contain protein(s) that function(s) similarly as insulin, but is /are not broken down in human's digestive system as insulin is. ( that's why a type I diabetes patient can not take insulin pill, but have to give himself/herself insulin shot). I wanted to know more about camel milk, did a search, found this book on amazon, and pre-ordered it before it is published. The book is about a mother who has a young son who has autism. She heard the camel milk might help, and did everything she could and got the milk. She then travels all over the world, meet people who raise camels, and promote camel milk to help camel farmers at one hand and parents with autism at the other hand. Her courage and determination are quite admirable. Now about book itself. It is more like a travel journal, recording where the author went, what she saw, whom she met, and what they said. If you like travel journal, you will like this book.

Great insight about Camel milk, it's usage and properties. Author's quest to get camel milk for her kid, her travel experience and knowledge about camel milk make this book an interesting & resourceful read.

Very valuable information for parents that want to recover their child, I also bought her other book now, A real Boy, can't wait to read that one as well.
