this is a superb handbook to the extensive British Museum exhibition. Anyone interested in the Vikings, and especially their artifacts and history, should own this book. It also costs 40 pounds in the museum, and discounted on Amazon. It is a great research volume, that will always be in demand for this reason.

A really fine inclusive book on the subject, covering all facets of the complex groups. Normally big books such as this become table paper weights; not this, it's worth reading cover to cover.

OUTSTANDING book. Museum-quality images and descriptions of Viking artifacts and where they were found. I only wish it was hard-cover; but that should not stop anyone from purchasing this fine book.

A beautiful, informative and affordable book. I've been reading Viking-age history for several years now and find that this book, aimed at generalists, strikes a wonderfully balance between the popular and the scholarly.

This very lavishly illustrated large-format volume was published for the international public exhibition of the same name put together by the British Museum, the National Museum of Denmark, and the Berlin State Museum. It was the first such exhibition in more than three decades, which gave the organizers the opportunity to show off a great many recent finds from many parts of Europe and the Near East (the Vikings got around) and to propose various refinements in interpretation. The centerpiece was "Roskild 6," the longest Norse warship yet excavated (though not that much of it actually survived above the keel), which was mounted in such a way that it could be broken down and easily moved to the next venue. Because it's a companion to a visual event, the natural emphasis is on material culture, though the objects on display, which includes a great many weapons and a great deal of jewelry of one kind and another, is often used to exemplify Scandinavian religion, social structure, politics, and the warrior ethos. Also, because of the intended audience for the exhibition, the book doesn't try to move beyond a broad survey of the period 850-1050, though the geographical reach is considerable. There are five broad sections (each by a different specialist), on trade and cultural contact, warfare and military expansion, political power and the aristocracy, beliefs and ritual, and the ships that were essential in making the Vikings what they were. The photography is of very high quality, though, so even the student of the period, who is unlikely to learn much that's new, will nevertheless drool over the large-format pictures, all of them in color. And they do provide an extensive bibliography.

Awesome big wonderful coffee table book great gift too for proud Danes or the Irish they loved so much they settled with instead of dominating. Photos from British Museum exhibit. Hubby says not a light read, he'll need to spend time on :)

Gorgeous book! My husband is going to love getting it for Christmas along with the book Sagas of Ragnar as we love the TV show Vikings.

Fantastic detailed book, lots of high quality images of items from the Viking age along with images of exhibition items again superb. The book also lists all items on display at the British Museum exhibition. Bought to help me before I visit. Highly recommended

Das Buch zur Ausstellung "Vikings life and legend", die z.Zt. in London ist, könnte man natürlich auch in der Ausstellung kaufen, aber erstens ist es da teurer und zweitens muß man dann das nicht ganz leichte Stück selber nach Hause tragen. Zum Inhalt: Das Buch ist ganz genauso gut wir die Ausstellung, kurz muss man haben. Auch ohne die Ausstellung ist es aber ein ausgezeichnetes Werk über die Welt, Kust, Leben und Geschichte der Wikinger.

Un catalogue d'exposition à la hauteur de la réputation du British Museum. Très haut niveau scientifique et néanmoins facile d'accès, un panorama complet du sujet et une très haute qualité éditoriale.

Wonderful - the best treatment of this subject that exists today and is likely to come forth for a very long time.
