I would treat it with a waterproof spray to be sure. It'd probably be fine in a drizzle, but if it's pouring hard I would not depend on it to keep things perfectly dry. **Q: is the bottom of the backpack made up of some hard plastic or though material to withstand floor/ground contact and resist friction / erosion?** A: The back and bottom are fabric. The back plane of the backpack has a semi-rigid piece inside surrounded by soft padding and a soft breathable nylon fabric exterior along its entire length. The bottom piece is a heavy nylon fabric with some padding. There is nothing like rubber feet or plastic runners to keep ground contact to a minimum. If the bag is dragged or slid across a rough surface it will begin to show. I found this bag to be better quality than most of the bags in the school supply isle at my local department store and as good or better quality than many at the local sporting goods/ camping supply store. The quality far exceeds the price. **Q: Will this hold a 17.3" laptop?** A: YES and NO... I have a Dell M6600 (17.3" screen - laptop closed dimensions 16.4"x10.7"x1.3") and it barely fits to the point where I would almost say no it doesn't fit. You have to stretch the corners of the backpack up over the laptop and than the zippers almost don't close. **Q: Will this backpack when full, fit under an airline seat?** A: I suppose it could depend on the airplane, but mine was full on a trip to Florida and back, and it fit under the seat in front of me without any problem. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tough, well-made pack for the price! *by on Reviewed in the United States September 14, 2025* Outstanding backpack for the price point. I run an entertainment business, and am lugging gear and materials around town several nights a week. This pack has held up beyond my expectations. It has plenty of room for my laptop, small mixer, microphones, cords & cables, plus assorted odds & ends. Being in Seattle, where it's awfully wet about 8 months out of the year, I can attest that the waterproofing works quite well. Have not had any issues with water getting into the pack, even while walking in heavy rain (I also treat the outside with waterproofing spray, for added protection, and highly recommend doing so).I'm especially pleased with the quality of the material/construction. While it isn't as rugged as my hiking backpack, it's well-made, with decently thick material and good stitching. With other packs I've owned, a common failure was that the "walls" between compartments would tear; no such issues here after more than a year of constant use. Zippers are still just fine, too. A couple of nitpicks: the mesh side pockets could be a bit stouter. One of them tore recently, but it's not a huge deal and is mostly my fault, anyway. Also, this backpack has a great little pocket on one of the straps, which is a perfect place for my pocket knife. Unfortunately for me, I tend to carry a backpack slung over my right shoulder, but the pocket is on the left strap, so getting to my knife while carrying the pack requires putting the pack down. Having a pocket on both straps would be ideal (Do it Amazon! Do it!). It has a charging port, too, which is a nice feature many packs at this price lack.Overall, this backpack works well, looks good (black is a popular color in the PNW), and is pretty darned tough. It's made of fine material and it's extremely sturdy. There are a lot of compartments, which may seem overwhelming at first, but once you start using the backpack more regularly, you'll be able to make sense of what to put where. You would think this back pack would cost as much as other name brand back packs considering its outstanding quality, but for 30$ this is an absolute steal. Northface can run you anywhere from $67 to $100+ on Amazon. For half the price, you can get a backpack that does the same thing and could possibly even be better. I love the colors, the hint of orange really catches my eye since orange is my favorite color. I was fortunate enough to get this for free with my Amazon credit, but I would gladly pay up to 100$ for this bag. That's honestly what it's worth. The drink compartments on the side are clutch and even have a clip that goes around the bottle and holds it in place. It fits nicely on my back without having to be adjusted and feels sturdy and comfortable when walking around. I'm not worried about it hanging too low or looking awkwardly packed (bulging) if I have a lot of stuff inside it.The only thing that I don't like is zipping and unzipping the main compartment - where you'd store your laptop. There's a layer of fabric built into the bookbag that covers this zipper and you need to be careful when zipping and unzipping, otherwise you risk getting the zipper caught if you quickly try to zip it up. However, this is hardly a reason for me to even consider sending the bag back or stop using it. I would rather be cautious anyway when zipping to preserve the bookbag so I'm kind of glad that it has that layer over the zipper.Overall, this bookbag is awesome. I can't be more satisfied. I would recommend it for any one. I'm an elementary school teacher so this is perfect for me. I don't have to carry anything in my hands and can transport my lunch, books, binders, laptop.. anything that I need to take to and from school can fit comfortably in this bag, and there will still be more room for other random things like an umbrella that can stay in there incase of a rainy day.If you're on the fence, just buy this anyway because you will be surprised. Prior to using this to carry my laptop and files, I was using a bag from Duluth--super heavy leather that weighed as much as a small child empty. So that had to go. I read work backpack reviews, believe it or not. And this one was highly recommended because the zippers are strong, there are multiple compartments, and the straps are well-padded. I agree with all of those assessments and would add that there is a strong carrying strap on the top. I detract one star because, like many back packs, this one tips forward. All. The. Time. You can't set it down and expect it to stay upright. Again, kind of like a small child. But I've adjusted my expectations and am really pleased with the four zipper compartments and the ease with which I can now organize and carry everything I need for work. I would also concur with other reviewers that the mesh waterbottle pockets should likely not be used for anything heavy. They won't last long. I have just ignored them; I pack a lunch bag separately and the water goes in there.
