Nikon COOLPIX P610 (Red)

My husband and I decided to upgrade our camera since we were about to be going on an Alaskan cruise and wanted to get amazing pictures of the views. We looked at several different cameras and researched them and were going back and forth between a point and shoot and a DSLR when we came across this one. We like the price and after reading the reviews decided that this might be the camera for us. We didn't want to have to mess with changing lenses and have to have a bunch of extra pieces so this was nice that it was just one solid camera to do the type of picture taking that we wanted. We got it a month before the cruise and practiced taking pictures and it was very easy. This zoom is amazing. We have crystal clear pictures from Alaska of the mountains and glaciers and wildlife and we were able to zoom so close that the glaciers felt like they were right in front of us. I got backup batteries but on the whole 12-day vacation I only had to charge the battery twice. We are so glad that we got this camera, it is everything we hoped for and more!

So far I am loving this camera. The zoom is terrific and so far I am happy with the clarity of my shots both zoomed all the way and the wide shots. The ability to take pictures at odd angles because of the versatile lcd screen is wonderful. I can now get shots that otherwise would be impossible for me. I also love the fact that it has an eye sensor. Seems like a small thing but once you are used to having one you will never want a camera that doesn't have the sensor. This camera has a very good grip and I never feel like it could easily slip out of my hand as I do with some cameras. The weight is fairly light for a 60x zoom camera and not to much for my arthritic hands to handle. I also got this in red and love the color. That's probably a girl thing. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a long zoom camera. I looked at the Sony HX400V/B and the Canon SX60 and this one had the feel and features that best suited me.

Got the Nikon P610 for a fair price. It's a good camera, takes good images, has awesome zoom, which is why I got it... I photograph birds. However, unless there is full light on the subject, you may not get auto-focus to work when fully zoomed in -- even if your subject is in shade. That get annoying. I'm working on learning how it's manual focus works... it doesn't leap out at you, but it's there in the myriad of controls and options.

I just got this and have used it a limited time but so far I am very happy. The zoom is awesome! It takes clear pictures and most of all it is easy to use. I am used to the Nikon COOLPIX because this is my third one. They only reason I keep buying another is because of the increased zoom. My other two still work like a charm. The other huge advantage to this one over my others, is that it has a view finder. I have wanted a good camera, with a good zoom, that had a view finder for a very long time and I am thrilled with this one. I am not a photographer by any means of the imagination, but I do love to take pictures. (ask my husband). So I wanted something that was easy to use and easy to figure out, but had a great zoom without having to carry all those extra lens'. If I find any negatives I will edit this post, but so far, so good.

I'd decided on a point and shoot, no more lens changing and lugging lenses around! Great success with a Lumix fz 50 convinced me point and shoot was for me . I explored on-line , just to see what was new & great. I liked the idea of the larger telephoto. and tried the P-610 out. I love it, Pictures are great, easy to use except, It is a bit small for my hands. After getting used to it I found it a simple likable camera that I've grown to really like! (I still use the fz 50, on occasion because I prefer its manual zoom!) I just take pictures and this camera works for me! UPDATE- While I still love love this little camera, it has developed a problem holding a charge and is headed for the repair shop at nikon. The problem started when I used a after-market battery designed for this camera. I am having trouble believing Amazon, is indeed selling junk, but this failure seems to bare this out. May 14 of this ear to August 14Th, 3months and Amazon will (per their policy) will not exchange this camera. They sold the camera, they sold me the batteries and 3 months later it is my problem--go figure how that makes the customer right? COME ON AMAZON STOP SELLING CRAP! AMAZON WHERE'S THE EASY BUTTON TO TALK TO CUSTOMER SERVIC, TALK ABOUT NOT WANTING TO STAND BEHIND YOUR SALES. Update 8/22/15--Thank You Amazon for replacing this camera or offer refund. I will update this review, later on! discussion comments: Dale, thanks for your comments, I agree and indeed, I did suspect the batteries initially. I conducted tests and finally purchased new batteries. All ran down in the camera. Now I have the new camera and so far it is fine! Was the camera bad, batteries or perhaps charger? I do know buying something that fails so quickly is not acceptable! I am not a test/repair center. I am interested in keeping potential customers informed. Was this a fluke, or common incident?--that's the purpose of reviews. My thoughts are this must be a rare occurrence, hence the exchange, rather than refund. Update 8/9/15 Thanks to Amazon, I received a new Nikon Coolpix p610. At first no problems, unfortunately it was a very short time frame, before the 2nd camera failed! Battery death averaged 28 photo's before it failed! after looking up this camera, I find that it is a failure mode that others are experiencing! (check DP Review, problems with the Nikon Coolpix P610 &P900). The camera takes excellent telephoto pictures and is a pleasure to use! My question for Nikon is what's the real deal on this camera? Are you going to correct the problem or keep dumping them on loyal customers? THANK YOU AMAZON FOR ACCEPTING THE RETURN!

I bought this camera to take on a safari trip to Africa. I had friends who told me that I did not need as much zoom as this camera had and that the fully extended zoom would be difficult to stabilize. I didn't have a lot of time to get familiar with the camera. So, I left it set on automaticsetting most of the time. Contrary to what my friends said, I did use the fully extended zoom a number of times -- you can only get so close to a leopard up a tree. My pictures were incredible. The colors and the focus were terrific. There were others on safari with mega expensive cameras who were taking down the information about my camera because they were so impressed with the pictures I managed to get. It is wonderful to make a purchase and end up thinking that it was a great buy. I would recommend this camera heartily. I also cannot wait to spend some more time with it so that I'll be able to use more of the features on my next safari trip. Just a great camera for the price!!

I used a Nikon FA for many years and was very happy with it. This camera fell way short of my expectations. To be honest the camera takes very good pictures. There are many cameras that take good pictures as well. I bought this camera because I wanted to be able to share photos right away using the WiFi feature. I am able to share but the process is very cumbersome. You will have to go back and forth between the App and the camera to get it to work. The app is lousy! If you think you will be able to share photos with the ease of taking a selfy this is not the camera for you. When I receive the camera the first thing I wanted to do is is learn to use the WiFi. The instructions of how to do this is not in the manual. I tried to get it to work using the manual but ended up calling Nikon Customer Service. The representative sent via email the instructions on how to operate WiFi. I asked why this critical step wasn't in the manual, she did not have a good answer other than saying I have the instructions now. Charging the camera: The manual states you have to use the USB cable that came with the camera. If you use other cables it "could result in overheating or damage to the camera". Viewing video with the camera is not in the manual, I'm still trying to figure that out. There is no instruction on their website or the manual on utilizing the features of the mode dial other than you have the capability. There is limited information on the function button in the manual. I have search the Nikon website for all of these issues. There is limited information on the operation and use of these lower-end cameras. There is tons of information on the high-end camera. My one nitpick is the battery cover has come open several time just handling the camera. My old Pentax digital camera was bullet proof compared to this camera, I wish it hadn't bit the dust. This guide answers many questions and provides tons of additional information on using the features of the camera.

Bought this for the large range zoom and it did not disappoint. Really impressive at the higher end of the zoom in that screen seems fuzzy your hand is trying to be steady and then pressing 1/2 way down on shutter button it "locks" in to the target and you usually get a really impressive picture. I was prompted to write a review after the recent lunar eclipse of the "super" moon. We were outside in rural Maine (no light pollution) but I didn't have a tripod or anything and still managed to capture a really nice shot of the blood moon during the total eclipse. I also caught the "moonset" that next morning over the pond and the camera really excels in low light situations. Only small gripe is you need to manually pop up the flash. Our prior Sony zoom would pop-up the flash automatically in low light situations but that one had the flash in the wrong spot as your finger was usually on top of it. Oh well a very impressive camera and my wife likes the Wi-Fi so we can transfer to her iPhone and she can post pictures from anywhere.
