The AlphaTRAK Glucose Starter Kit makes monitoring your diabetic pets glucose (sugar) values from home easy. It is accurate and requires only a tiny blood sample. It is made specifically to test blood sugar in dogs and cats.

seems to work fine.
my first pet version and i guess it works as should since the control test was 185. Was not too bad setting up but, i will be darn if i can't figure out how to rid of the one alarm reminder alert i accidentally set when pushing C instead of M.. Was pretty quick at reading my cat's glucose level and gives you 2mins to get blood so that is great for new diabetic cat parents especially those with long hair cats. note: lancet works best with clear cap off, with it on it stinks at puncturing skin!Like purple so that unfortunately kinda pushed me in the end into buying this unit that requires extremely pricey darn strips! Yet, i also wanted a reliable pet unit instead of a human one since we are still new to taking care of our diabetic kitty so in the end, this system is worth it to us.Update: now that i am more knowledgable and comfortable with taking care of my diabetic cat and he is doing better, i decided to start using the cheaper 'freestyle lite' test strips that also work in this pet meter. i use cat code listed on alphatrek test strip vial (37) and have been comparing the readings from the same blood drop using both the alphatrek strips and the freestyle strips and numbers are only 6 lower using freestyle strips compared to the alphatrek strips (6 lower all four times i tested him so far). My cats numbers are mostly under 200 right now and no longer above 300-400 so i don't know how accurate readings would be at higher numbers (read they are higher with freestyle lite strips when BG is higher). Eitherway, i still think this is the best meter for pets and with freestyle lite strips being able to be used with it, i am glad i chose it for sure. Buying the freestyle test strips on auction can save you lots of $$, i won an auction for 12 vials and ended paying 11.12 per instead of the $53 per vial i was paying for alphatrak vials!!update: readings seem to vary per freestyle lite strip vial, with 3 vials so far, numbers have been an average of 10 lower under 175 glucose levels and 10 or more higher with glucose levels above 175-260.. Given this, i found it best to order another alphatrak meter to solely use with freestyle lite strips so i can change the cat code numbers per new FL vial so to better match the alphatrak strip readings without having to change the cat code of the AT vial strips when i use them to verify low/questionable freestyle lite readings.update: my second AT2 came with a different lancet device (see pic). i don't know whether this is a newer version or older but, if it is a newer version, it too with cap top is totally worthless as is! do they not check these things when they make them? as you can see in pic, lancet device top cap part is higher then the lancet itself even though lancet is fully ejected as high as it can go. Without top cap i like the feel of this version in my fingers better but, the eject button is a bit stiff and requires more pressure when you push it.

STRIPS ARE A RIP, BUT GREAT MONITOR!
Our 16 year old cat came down with Diabetes recently (not for being overweight) and it has been hard getting him regulated on insulin. We decided to take his care to another level rather than rely on blind dosage amounts that Vets suggested. Information is essential in managing diabetes and bi-weekly trips to the vet simply weren't doing the job.Enter the AlphaTRAK 2. I must say this device seems intimidating at first never having dealt with diabetes before, but it is really easy to use. It has a useful (although cheesy) video and instruction guide. It comes with the lancets, testers and monitor. After months of use, here are some TIPS to save you time:1. The video appears to show the couple taking the drop of blood on TOP of the test strip. DO NOT DO THIS!!! I can't stress that enough. You will make life hard for yourself and pet and waste numerous expensive strips. Instead, look at the two half moons...each has a little point coming off the side. This is what you stick up against the blood. It only takes a small drop and works EVERY TIME! Use whatever side is more comfortable to you.2. You CAN buy the Freestyle Lite test strips at HALF THE COST of the Alpha Trak test strips. I only caution this IF you are getting numbers around 150 on the Freestyle Lite strips (since you probably shouldn't be giving a dosage at this number). In my experience they tend to be 9-15 points higher than the reading on the Alpha Trak strips.I use the SAME CODE on the bottle of the Alpha Trak strips for the Freestyle Lite strips (no change). My experiment with this consisted of the test solution and 2 strips of each. Aplha Trak readings were 148 and 145 respectively, Freestyle lite readings were 159 and 154. Take that for what it is worth. These readings are close enough for me and my cat is doing just fine. Just think to use a +- 20 to be on the safe side if you are close.3. FYI, READ the instructions carefully when setting up (I usually don't) so you don't get an annoying alarm sound going off at midnight or 4am!

Easy to use
Bought this glucose monitor for monitoring my newly diagnosed cat. Very easy to use , the lancets that come included in the kit are also good although I didn’t use them with the pen device. I would say the only downside to this machine is the cost of new testing strips ! They are very expensive but unfortunately you have no choice but to keep buying them.Overall it is a easy machine to use , a tiny amount of blood is all you need and to keep my cats glucose levels as stable as possible is a priority.

Expensive device
This product was recommended by the vet as it’s the one that they use! The lancet device is useless so I’ve given up with that and the test strips are really expensive at £50 plus for 50 (£1 each to throw in the bin) but this item is calibrated for dogs and cats therefore you can’t just buy any monitor so all in all a very expensive piece of kit but it’s a necessity.

Well worth the money!
Although it may seem costly at first it’s definitely worth it. Before purchasing I read on line that you could use a human blood sugar monitor and it would work just as well.A human one was cheaper but wish I hadn’t bothered as it just caused myself and my cat so much stress when trying to use it and it didn’t work. I would recommend purchasing the Alphatrek. It’s so easy to use and gives brilliant results every time.

Good product
Little expensive a lot cheaper on pet prescriptions or prescription website for Pet. The reader was very easy to use and the strips. The only problem I had was the pain it didn’t really pierce the skin very well that was very poor quality
