AKG Pro Audio AKG Perception 170 Professional Instrumental Microphone

This is an excellent small diaphragm condenser mic, I've been using them for years and was happy to see them on sale so I gladly bought another one. Works well for drums, percussion, strings, acoustic guitar. Sounds equal to many SDCs costing much more.

Incredible value. Works great for multiple applications. Sensitive enough to work with interfaces of all levels. It’s a durable, metal build. It’s a standard size and compatible with all sorts of mounting hardware. Recording quality is good. The cardioid pattern is tight enough for good off-axis rejection. The higher sensitivity than many comparable models makes it a bit more forgiving of imperfect placement.

P170.... I did A LOT of research, and tired several microphones trying to set up my home studio (acoustic guitar/vocals) For recording my guitar, in my untreated space, I prefer the P170, for recording my vocals, I prefer the SM57.... It's as simple as that. It IS a condenser microphone, so it is very good at picking up sound... Gaits, and Noise reduction technology is your friend, but this absolutely works in a home studio environment to give you a sound if you're to 1) find the space that gives you the best input, and 2) do a little bit more work on the digital/editing end. I think it's preferable to the C151 because it IS NOT as good as a microphone (the C151 is going to pick up MORE background noise, and has a lower noise floor) What I found for vocals, is it didn't handle my dynamics as well as the SM57, (needing to adjust the gain for softs parts vs loud parts in the same song, which has a way of dampening the emotion) But if you're like me, just trying to put down some finger-picking, country-romance, acoustic guitar, and vocals, the SM57 for vocals and the P170 for the guitar is a SOLID plan.

I use it to record Acoustic Guitar and it gave me a great recording. I record two signals, direct in via an Acoustic Fly Rig and then the AKG Perception through a Neve Preamp. No gripes on the recorded quality. I tried recording my voice on the AKG and did not like the results, probably my terrible singing too! I'll stick to recording guitar with it. But the AKG is a fantastic value for its price.

This is my first small condenser mic so of course I think it’s the best I’ve ever had but I do know good quality mics from bad ones because of my experience with dynamics and LDCs of different qualities and manufacturers. I bought a pair of these to use as a matched pair and even though they’re not technically matched they perform great in a stereo array. Very low noise, great rejection from behind, and durable construction. Alone or as a pair these mics sound great on acoustic guitars. I’m no pro studio engineer. I’m just a guy who’s got a small home studio in a spare bedroom and these mics are great for my purposes. More than great. They make acoustic instruments sound amazing just like you hear them in the room thanks to their flat response and the 10dB pad is cool for when you want to mic an amp or drums. I recommend trying one of these with the pad on an amp. It gives electric guitar a different sound than you get from something like an SM57. I would recommend this mic to someone on a budget in a home studio situation. If you go cheaper you’re going to get poor quality and have to upgrade your mic sooner rather than later. Of course there are more expensive SDCs and they’ll be better but I think this AKG is at the point where quality is great and spending more isn’t going to give you huge returns in terms of quality.

If you're on a limitted budget and looking for that sweet spot where you get the most for your money, this is it for acoustic instrument mics. I found this mic to be warm, accurate, and quiet. It also has good directional separation - so it has been useful to record different acoustic instruments (stringed) playing together simulataneously. For value, I give it 5 stars. There are better mics out there for recording acoustic instruments, but I don't know of anything better in this price range. This is not a Cadillac, but it's sort of like getting a Camry for the price of a used Chevette. If you're starting into recording acoustic instruments, you should try one of these. For instruments, I think it is much better than AKG's p220.

Heard this mic was just as good as studio models starting at more than triple the cost (and on up into the thousands of dollars!). So I got one to record mainly acoustic guitar for my home demos. My SM-58s do not nearly have the dynamic range to capture decent acoustic sound. The AKG 170 does the job and is perfect for home demos—for me anyway. You be the judge. I've also found that mic-ing up my Fender Hot Rod amp with the AKG 170 results in far superior performance than an SM-58 as well. Highly recommend this product. The AKG 170 is professional quality in construction and performance at an accessible price.

No lo dudes, solo hazlo, no te vas a arrepentir. Yo compré uno principalmente para voz, pero es muy versátil, y me gustó tanto que a los 5 meses compré otro para poder hacer grabaciones en estéreo, o grabar dos voces secundarias a la vez. La tonalidad que produce es excelente, con cuerpo y brillo, y sin tener un exceso de frecuencias medias como muchos otros, que para mí es super importante. Totalmente recomendado para voz y/o instrumentos, además es bastante portable por su tamaño, en caso de que necesites grabar fuera de tu estudio.

È un ottimo prodotto per le registrazioni in teatro o luoghi chiusi per registrare strumenti da orchestra, quindi archi, chitarra, pianoforte etc. Non l'ho provato all'aperto, ma per un microfono così avrebbe veramente poco senso. Rumore praticamente nullo negli usi testati ( vcc bmpc con registrazione ausiliaria zoom R12, mixer boeringher 8 Canali)

Klein, hinterlässt einen robusten Eindruck. Sprache und Gesang werden gut wiedergegeben. Für meine Zwecke ausreichend.

Initially bought one of these for recording acoustic guitar. Was immediately struck by how quiet it was compared to my other "entry level" mics; no self-noise appearing until you crank the gain up past 90%, even then it's still quiet. Sound is great, and depending on the distance from your source you can get everything from intimate & direct through to big and roomy sounds - all captured faithfully. It also works well for recording loud guitar amps. I've tested it side-by-side with a condenser mic (CM25 MkIII) and there's no discernible difference in tone. The pad switch seems handy, but haven't had to use it yet. Was curious about stereo recording, so bought a set of matched RØDE M5s, but those were comparatively pretty noisy & tinny, so returned them and bought a second P170. Even though they're not 'matched' there's no obvious difference in output or tone (bought 5 months apart) - and they work fantastically on a stereo bar in standard stereo configurations. They're very slim, quite long, and feel quite sturdy and high-quality. The mount provided fits well, but you could probably knock it out accidentally with little force. Overall, very impressed with these mics.
