It says multipurpose. Does this mean it works on all classes of fires?

The "ABC" in the name of the product means it works on classes A, B & C Fires.A=Ordinary combustible materials like paper, wood and fabrics, rubber. Most of the times, this type of fire is effectively quenched by water.B=Flammable liquids (like gasoline, oils, greases, tars, paints etc) and flammable gases. Dry chemicals and carbon dioxide are typically used to extinguish these fires.C=Live electrical equipment like motors, generators and other appliances. For safety reasons, nonconducting extinguishing agents such as dry chemicals or carbon dioxide are usually used to put out these fire.Hope this helps.

Why does the title say 5 lb. and the description say 10 lbs.? What is the true weight?

The true weight is 10 lbs. That is the weight of the container plus extinguishing agent. The container holds 5 lbs of abc dry chemical powder.

Which is better for all-around home use, the amerex b500 or b402?  i understand the b402 has a higher u/l rating but that decreases flow rate.

The B500 & B402 are the same size & weight & have exactly the same discharge time (14 seconds) & are both ABC rated.  The B500 uses the older Amerex ABC powder recharge while the B402 uses a newer Amerex ABC powder formulation which was developed to give the 5 lb size an uprated UL rating, from 2A:10B:C to 3A:40B:C.  The B402 does not have a decreased flow rate.  For home use the B402 may put out slightly more class A fire, which is the main risk in a dwelling.

Yes it is rechargeable. In the owner's manual it advises to have it professionally recharged and maintained. It provides a date chart for you as well.
