Your hands aren't too small
I had always had trouble with movement/playing of my Left Hand, until I started using this book. I had decided several times that guitar must just not be for me, that my hands must be too small, but I didn't want to give up. Other folks with small hands learn to play, so I kept working at it, miserably. This book showed me things expensive guitar teachers never did. Learning how to move the left hand, and how to anticipate and place left hand fingers as I played opened up my world. I'm grateful.

Excellent book - even for "experienced" beginners
I wish I had this book when I was 16.I've played guitar now for several years, mostly as a hobby. As is true of most amateur guitar enthusiasts, I spent most of my time messing around, creating strange sounds and playing around with tabs of my favorite songs that I found online. I knew basic barre chords and a few open chords, and that was about it.This book would have helped me a lot in those early days. Alexander works you through all of the basics, from how to hold the guitar to how to hold the pick, how to ensure that your right and left hands are in harmony, how to play major scales, how to strum, how to play slides, bends, and do a few other tricks. These are all the basic elements of guitar playing, yet here they are explained in such simplicity and clarity that anybody could understand them. The exercises work wonders, too. I can finally do some basic fingerstyle patterns, and I now know the appropriate place to put my right hand for effective palm muting.I can't think of any drawback to this method. There are no corny songs to play, and everything is presented at a very slow, deliberate pace.If I had this book when I was 16, I'd be much better than I am today.

Excellent guide for experienced musicians
I read music, having studied piano, clarinet and voice. Explains TAB as well as classical treble clef and chord charting notations. I have wanted to learn guitar, and this book has a concentrated introduction to music theory and pedagogy (recommended fingerings, strumming/picking, many recommended exercises to learn major/minor scales and jazz scales for improvising). Great resource for improving technique in many chapters dedicated to specific needs to play cleanly and in tune. Recommend for proficient musicians wanting to expand their knowledge to a new instrument or clean up skills by breaking down the elements found in music compositions.

Great for beginner at any Age
Great beginner book for everyone at any age. Starts with basics of how to practice to the fundamentals leading to minor and major scales. As book continues each exercise applies to how it would look in Guitar Tab so it can be read and understood as one would advance. The book is not meant to be read and understood in a day, but as a guide introducing everyone to a life long journey into guitar.

This book was really helpful.
At one point I was a pretty good guitar player. That was decades ago. Now that I have more time on my hands I've picked the guitar up again and am using this book to help my get back into it. It's a good resource. I recommend it.

A complete workout for guitar for beginners
With eleven chapters starting from the basics of how to play a guitar and the "first fretting movements" to "hanner-ons and pull-offs," this has exercises to cover just about everything a beginner needs to become proficient (weil, ok, the hammer-ons and pull-offs are probably intermediate level skills) in short punchy easy to follow exercises. Remember, as the author states, the idea is not to become expert at the exercises but to use them to become skilled at playing music and as such they are the perfect bridge to help the beginner guitarist achieve this - and more. I've bought a few of this series of books and intend to purchase more.

Less than the Cost of a Half Hour Lesson
For less than the cost of a half hour private lesson, you get hours of structured practice. The book will set you (a beginner) up with a great foundation for your guitar skills. It's an ideal supplement to any instructor learning you may be doing. It actually filled in many gaps left by my 'teacher'. If you're a beginner, this book and "The First 100 Chords for Guitar" seem to work great together.
