Whilst the price may seem high - this is a specialist substantial book showing superb ship builder models. If you appreciate museum quality ship models and cannot get to Glasgow or Greenwich, this is for you (and me)

372 colour pages, 295mm (w) x 285mm (h), The full ships and close up detailing are all well photographed. Relatively text rich first 147 pages, photography there being more general including some of contemporary workshops. Then 220 pages of the catalog itself, most pages showing 3-4 full sized models, recto and verso. Some single models or pairs are shown over 2 full pages, centrefold style. A delight to browse. More than a mere coffee table decoration, it delves into the links between the Clyde dockyards, its builders, the museum and modelling. Building the collectionThen the catalogThe collection is of ships from 1727 4th Rates and frigates, Navy Board Model style, to modern container ships and dredgers. Where they have an exhibition history, it is detailed. There is a list of model exhibitions from 1840-1969 at the start of the catalog. The ships themselves have details of their fates, where they are known.This hefty tome makes a memorable present for anyone interested who has room to keep this. It has alot to please all tastes: Historian, Glasgow local, professional, artist, modeller or lay afficionado. Only perhaps the National Maritime museum Catalog can rival it as a beautiful book in the genre, but even that hardly surpasses this.RECOMMENDED

Very good and well illustrated book, a little upset it is now sold with 30% off direct from the publishers, sort of spoilt it ! How ever, a great book and recommended.

This book was bought as a gift. The book contents are phenomenal. The pictures, descriptions and information about the models is incredibly detailed and complete. Why only 4 stars? Because this book is very large and heavy, thus there are issues with the spine separating from the pages and cover. Perhaps this book should be a 2 vol. set.. The bookseller replaced our copy due to the issues, so I give the sellers 5 stars for their customer service. They were excellent. I feel badly because the book contents deserve 5+stars. But a book is only as good as its binding.

Excellent well illustrated book very instructive book, very well produced

A book full of excellent content but severely let down by poor binding and cover quality. Binding is already coming unstuck, inner cover pages have come unglued and bubbled and book itself is warped. Such a shame as it was an expensive book I purchased for my husband for Christmas and the finish really lets down an otherwise excellent book. Would easily have been a 5 star if not for poor quality finish.

Bought for a present for my husbands birthday and it proved to be a very popular choice. It arrived well wrapped and very quickly with no damage to the book at all. A good choice

This book is crammed with beautiful photos of incredible models. I wanted it for its content, and that is perfect. The paper and coatings used mean the pages are heavier than this type of binding can really handle. Even if it arrives perfect, standing upright on a shelf will cause the binding to fail. The solution is to lay the book flat when in storage. Ideally, such a heavy tome should have been given a sewn binding, and a cloth bound cover. I love my copy as it is though. As I say, I wanted it for the contents, which are awesome. Any model builder or lover of model artistry and maritime history would love this book.

Petit commentaire rapide après première lecture.Livre de belle fabrication divisé en deux parties d'importance a peu près équivalente ( + 150 pages chaque)La première traite de l'utilisation des modèles de navires dans la construction navale (représentation / plan en 3D / Plan de bordage non développable) et de leurs constructeurs (les modélistes). Petit passage (trop limité à mon goût) sur les modèles destinés aux tests hydrodynamiques.La seconde reprend le catalogue photographique intégral des modèles du musées ( + 150 pages + de 650 modèles). Chaque photographie comporte une notice qui demeure succincte.Il s'agit d'une sorte de bible sur le sujet (mais limité à un musée limité lui-même aux constructions sur le Clyde)Pourquoi pas 5 étoiles ? on aurait préféré des notices plus développées et plus didactiques. Certaines maquettes auraient mérité des photos supplémentaires. Par ailleurs (mais les auteurs n'y peuvent rien) les modèles antérieurs à 1850 sont peu nombreux ; idem pour les grands navires militaires. Enfin, beaucoup de modèles sont des demi-coques de navires sans grand intérêt et dont le rendu en illustration est... assez plat. Ces "défauts" sont la simple contrepartie de l'exhaustivité.Néanmoins, un bon et bel ouvrage pour passionnés.

Superb hardback book with lavish illustrations. The shipping packaging is dreadful. Mine arrived OK but this was more by accident.

The recent spate of ship model catalogues from various museums during the last decade are wonderfully beautiful and detailed. This one now takes its rightful place among the catalogues of this under appreciated art form. I can only hope other museums will publish similar summaries of their precious collections for all of us to appreciate.
