Helpful!
This book is very helpful for a 'newby' who is getting back to sewing after a 30 year hiatas. It's clearly written and I've found it helpful as I tackled fitting a formal dress pattern.

This is a great book for anyone who is a first time garment maker or has been doing this for years.
It starts with explanations of simple sewing information. It explains how to measure yourself and step by step to the finished garment. I bought this for my daughter who has just started sewing. Her main interest is making clothes. I make quilts so I was no help. I highly recommend this for any degree of skills.

Is It Worth It?(Sewing Edition)
So, the big question, Is this the same material that is in the Complete Photo Guide To Fitting.. YES-the exact same material,minus/plus a paragraph in one or two sections . This book is also smaller than the TCPGTPF by about 96 pages. If you have The Complete Photo Guide. I would NOT purchase this one, as it pretty much a smaller version of the first one.Preface-(Same information given in the introduction of TCPGTPF), a written page about good fitting and what is needed to achieve a good fit.Fitting Fundamentals,(Laying The Foundation In TCPGTPF)Walks you through understanding pattern-making and commercial pattern terms.Ease, how to choose which pattern size to start with and how to understand the drag, folds and flares that your garment is producing.SIDE NOTE:(. If you are full busted and have problems fitting your front bodice. Might I suggest Craftsy Full bust adjustment with Jenny Rushmore. Amazing instruction, I am full busted and fitting bodices -esp woven is like (Fit and Frustration), Wine please.Creating A Fitting Muslin-(More From Laying The Foundations In TCPGTPF)This goes over how to balance a garment, what to wear to a fitting, transferring markings, opening areas that are too tight and pinning as well as fitting tips.Altering Patterns- (Also from Laying The Foundations In TCPGTPF)Walking, truing, changing seam allowance, moving darts, etc.Fitting Projects:Skirt,Bodice with dart and Princess seam Bodice-I thought it was weird that the first book did not touch on fitting with a bust and waist dart, as most commercial sewing dress patterns, that I have-have both if it is not princess seamed.(May be Moi though, I love vintage and vintage repros.) I also need/look for all the darts I can get!!AcknowledgementAbout the authorIndex Overall I think Sarah Veblans fitting teaching are miles ahead of many others, well thought out and formatted in a replicable systematic way.-of course learning how to fit will take multiple failures -more failures than successes at first.I'm not sure how to rate this book: here's why,If you don't have her first book, this book is definitely 5 stars because of the condensed information the book is more digestible. All in all I think a ton of information was given in TCGTPF-I think this book gave the reader the bare basics of what they needed. Which I loved. But I am also disappointed that the book does not state that it's pretty much 2-3 sections of her old book material, Seems kind of dishonest I feel like she could have written a study guide in the back of the first book, advising which chapters to go through first and why. :( /or added this info to her website. So here's a breakdown of my ratingFitting Exercises 3-Missing a bodice with waist dart and dresses-which I think could have easily been put in as it's just a bodice attached to a skirt. As much as I wanted to see pants and coats/jackets I am happy she left those out as I think they present higher fit challenges than a beginner would be able to tackle.(Do It Right Or Not At All) (Disclaimer-She does show how to add a waist dart, just not how to fit with one already given.)Presentation 5-1 For Lack Of Full Disclosure.Ability to replicate 5-Clear instruction, although trial and error will be needed.Content 5Is it worth it?YES, as long as you don't have the first one.

Like taking a class in tailoring fantastic book!
I have been sewing for years for my children but not for my self because I am very tiny and always had to do adjustments and had a hard time with fitted clothing this book is great it is so easy to understand I knew what needed to be done to my pattern before I started.

don't buy it
This is the exactly, but 'purged', copy of Sarah Veblen's excellent book (5 stars) "The Complete Foto Guide to perfect fitting". The idea to present a 'castrated' fitting guide to beginners is ludicrous. A beginner needs to have even more solutions presented than advanced sewers, as long as he or she does not understand the fitting system and cannot identify the problems in fitting he or she encounters. .He or she would benefit more from the Complete Foto guide.I also do not understand why the 'full' edition would be too difficult for the beginners.

not for beginners
i don't think this is an absolute beginners guide & the name is a bit misleading.the book is very well laid out with lots of colour photos and reference pictures which was the only thing i liked, however i feel it is way too complicated for a beginner and not what i was looking for. does not show how to alter patterns in a simple way.
