I didn't want a phone with answering machine but liked the look of this phone. I asked the question on Amazon if the answering machine could be turned off. A reviewer said no or did not explain it very good. I went ahead and purchased the phone and Iare very happy with it. You can in fact have the answering machine on or off and it is quick and easy to switch between these options. I wear hearing aids and have had difficulty with previous phone in hearing some conversations. This is not the case with this phone.
