A baby boomer reads her first (and last) Manga

*by S***S on Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2019*

I read this book as part of a reading challenge. I really am genuinely interested in expanding my reading life and reading out of my comfort zone. As part of that process you will find new things to love and new things to dislike. Really dislike. Dislike a lot. Manga is read back to front. Each page is read right to left and top to bottomish. That was no problem, except I think I may have read a few of the middle page panels out of order. I was able to follow the story for the most part but I definitely felt like I was missing some vital information. Or maybe a section of the book was missing? Perhaps this is not the first volume in the series (despite being labeled volume 1)? I guess the numbers may be backwards too. Or maybe the plot was really boring?I use the term plot very loosely here. There was no plot. Basically, a girl named Sawa Mitoma is starting high school. She is a scared little mouse with no self esteem. Her living situation is tenuous. It appears the rent has not been paid and her mother is “not at home.” Sawa spends her days worrying about offending people and doing something wrong. She anticipates that she will always be in trouble for something. For no apparent reason, she is befriended by two older male students who invite her to be on the student council. She does not realize that they are part of the Sohmas family, which is a big deal for unclear reasons. She steps on one of the boys by mistake. Some girls at school are jealous of her while others welcome her and want to be friends. Toward the end, a group of students go to the Sohmas’ home and make sukiyaki. The end.I rarely give one star reviews, but I could not find anything to like here. I can only assume that I am missing something important since this is such a highly rated book. Please leave a comment if you can shed some light on this for me. As covered above, I did not like the story. I also did not care for the overwrought emotion, though I know that this is part of the Manga style. Emotionally over-reactive teens are of no interest to me and I don’t think this is good role modeling for already hysterical youth. Even more potentially destructive is the main character’s total lack of self esteem. If there was growth and change in her character then I missed it. My final critique is the art work. I just don’t care for the appearance and features of the characters, which is a totally personal opinion. For some reason, they make me think of Holly Hobby dolls (Google it, kids!) In summary, I am glad that I tried this genre. I learned that I really don’t like it.

Great Sequel of an Amazing Manga

*by K***E on Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2020*

I enjoyed it. It centers around the children of the Zodiac characters from the original series and introduces a new outcast befriending the Sohma clan. We unfortunately don't get to see our beloved Zodiac this time around, but the author teases us with what they've been up to when the new characters talk about "their parents" with their friends. You don't have to read the first series to understand this one, but considering it LOOKS like a pretty stereotypical story about a bunch of high school kids at first glance, you will have to read the main series to truly appreciate its value and complexity. The main series is called "Fruits Basket" and it's amazing, so check it out.

    Way to go!!

I cannot wait for the next book. I did feel a little deja vu from the original series but hey this is a continuation/spinoff of the first series so to be expected. All in all I'm in this for the long haul.
