The Amazon listing says they are made in Thailand by local artisans. The one I have is well-made.

Is it supposed to have a strong smell?

No. If you sniff it, you may detect a sent of cut wood. Otherwise, no odor at all.

Are varnish, paint, glue used in manufacture?

No. We use only teakwood and cooking vegetable oil.
