FAST grind, and great for drip makers!
Likes: Fast grinding, even oily beans. Does a nice job, and not too noisy when the COVER is put on, otherwise- it's noticeably louder. Just a little finer than medium, is how we grind our coffee. Grinds are just right for our Mr. Coffee, and Black And Decker 12 cup drip makers- Yes we have two drip coffee makers, my wife doesn't drink her coffee as strong as I like it. Dislikes: You cannot use this machine continuously to grind say, a can's worth, like I usually do. It will thermally shut down. It specifically says so in the manual. Our now deceased Cuisinart did the same thing. So, grind what you need, and if it shuts off, just wait a while to resume. Polycarbonate plastic grinds cups WILL crack and break if you hit them, or tap them on something to get all the grinds out. Don't do that! The Cuisinart had that issue, and I'm going to be much more careful with this one. Overall, if you're not a really snobby coffee eccentric, that needs perfectly uniform conical cut beans, this grinder works great. It's reasonably priced, and I like it a bit better than the Cuisinart.

Great Grinder for Low Price
I've been using my new grinder for 2 days now and I am very pleased with it. It is easy to use, looks good on the counter top, grinds fast and my coffee tastes great. I'm glad I chose this one instead of one of the more expensive ones with good reviews, this one has all the functionality that I need to make delicious coffee. I use it to grind coffee beans for espresso and french press, also for a drip machine (which I gladly tossed in the bin after getting a french press.) **** UPDATE March 10th, 2012**** I've had this grinder now for about 7 months, and still going strong! Yes, it sometimes gets coffee grounds on the counter when scooping it out but I've never seen a grinder that doesn't do that. However, I have regularly two problems with this grinder: 1. Sometimes the beans don't go through properly while grinding or get stuck, so I tend to shake it and hit the bottom gently against the counter top to get them to go on through. This is not a huge deal. Happened with my last grinder as well. 2. It likes to get clogged. The opening where the grounds come out often just plugs up completely. This happens on a regular basis (every 6-10 weeks or so maybe), especially when I grind a lot of oily dark roasted beans. To solve the problem I unplug it, remove the beans, canister, and other parts. I take something to loosen the coffee grounds that are plugging up the hole. It'll work again after that, but to really get the job done I also make sure that the grinder elements are clear, and run some rice through the grinder a couple of times. The rice picks up a lot of those oils and residue that builds up on the inside of the machine. When I've done that it works like new again. I will stick for now with my 5 star rating. We use our grinder twice every day and it is still working fine. For the really low price of this grinder I can't complain. **** UPDATE January, 2015**** Still works! :-)

Generally well designed and a great value vs. Cuisinart-DBM-8
For a decade I have owned Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill or a similar earlier model, all of which cost about $50.00. These units predictably fail within 18-24 months, grinding 1 or 2 servings of coffee beans per day. I thought I would give Mr. Coffee a chance. Advantages Over Cuisinart-DBM-8 -Much more compact, takes up considerably less counterspace, easier to pull out and maneuver -Is less noisy and the noise itself is less high-pitched. The Cuisinart-DBM-8 is very loud. -Costs $20.00 less -The bin which catches the ground coffee is a made of type of plastic which resists caking of ground coffee to the plastic. It's much better than the Cuisinart-DBM in this respect. The plastic must have a different composition. -Once you get past the learning curve (see below) it's easier to remove the plastic coffee bin -Reliability vs. Cuisinart-DBM-8 is an open question Design Flaws and Workarounds: -Inexcusably there is piercing blue light that stays on when the unit is plugged in, serving no purpose by the way. This is what you might see on a gamer's PC. I covered it w/black electrical tape. - The plastic top that covers the bin is poorly designed. The ridge is not tactile at all and it takes two hands to take it off. I retrofitted mine with a piece of soft rubber that I put on with double stick tape above the ridge. Now I can remove it w/one hand -To pull out the coffee bin/hopper, you have to place you hand against a ledge above the hopper and then slide out the bin using your hand as leverage. It's a weird non-intuitive design. With the Cuisinart-DBM-8, you just take one hand and pull the hopper out. You can't do that with this unless you have the hands of a basketball center. Overall this is a much better value than the Cuisinart-DBM-8. It does have its quirks and learning curve though. Update: Still works great w/my retrofits. However, don't put coffee beans in it the night before. If it jams and won't come on, just screw out the assembly, turn it over and shake, remove fine powder from area where coffee goes into plastic bin and you're good to go. This has only happened once. Unit is a steal.

So far so good after about a month of use
So far so good after about a month of use!!! I actually really love this grinder and if it holds out for a few years, I will be very happy. I was surprised to find that I actually like it even better than my old Cuisinart, which was similar in design. Husband and I aren't exactly coffee connoisseurs, we don't do espresso and we only need it for drip, but we do love to buy the whole beans and grind at home. So I wouldn't really know if it grinds fine enough or just perfect for people who are coffee perfectionists! However, this grinder does a better job than my old Cuisinart. It used to leave a few big chunks of beans, this one grinds perfectly, at least perfectly enough for me. I guess I really don't care about what others are freaking out about if there is a little fine powder mixed in with course grounds. (So what?) My old Cuisinart cost about $15 more than this one and broke after just over a year. If this one works for at least a few years I will be thrilled. This grinder is extremely easy to use & I have zero mess.....which I really love! (Old Cuisinart used to spill some grounds behind the cup and had a little mess & spillage.) I love the little scoop that attaches to the lid of the cup. I don't use it often since I grind exactly what I need, but love that when I do need it it's right there attached and I don't have to remember I have it and search for it in a drawer. We don't make a full pot every day so the hopper holds enough beans for just over a week for us, which is really nice. Fill it up once and have one touch grinding all week. My husband likes the little blue light! haha.......the dial and light make it super fast and simple to change the amount you want to grind. We make bigger pots on the weekends. I love the one touch, no mess of this grinder. It looks nice on the counter and because there's no mess it stays looking neat and clean all week. Another thing I love is that the hopper screws out to clean. (A feature my Cuisinart didn't have so I could never really be sure it was clean down in the gears.) So quite a few reviewers are freaking out about the huge mess this makes all over their kitchen.....powder spewing...onto floors......?? I have no idea what they are doing or what they are talking about. I have a habit of taking out the bin with the grounds and lightly tapping it a couple of times on the counter to settle them. They pour out easily and no mess. As far as cleaning it, I just literally wash it once a week or so. How much mess can you possibly make by taking it to the sink and washing it? One small thing I did notice once when I did use the scoop. I ground enough for 8 cups, but when I used the scoop there were 10 scoops of grounds. It might be grinding a tad more than it's set for? That's ok...coffee is good, not too strong and I can always dial it down if I wanted. I looked and looked and looked at grinders. I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. I was frustrated that all of these grinders had bad reviews, but there was no way I was going to pay $80 - $200 for a grinder. Love this grinder and the price was perfect. ($36) So if it doesn't break on me I'll be taking another look at Mr. Coffee products next time I need anything coffee related.

Instructions need a bit more "hand holding" for uncaffinated people.
What a freaking waste of my time! I was a little suspicious when I received this and the factory box seemed to have been opened. But I let my naivete sway me and went ahead and cleaned all the parts the instructions said to clean before I tried it. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Waste of money, waste of time. I don't know if the PRODUCT is crap or if I was just shipped a "return" product that was already dead. Doesn't matter. I really needed my coffee today. Addendum: When packing this thing up to return, heard an odd "click" I hadn't heard before. Upon checking, I found that the Grind Chamber (the part the coffee grounds go into after grinding) has to be FIRMLY seated into place - producing a loud "click". In the Troubleshooting part of the User Manual, all it said was make sure the Grind Chamber is in the proper position. They don't mention the "click" there. To be fair, in the "Before First Use" section it DID say to "install into unit by pushing to lock into place" but, well, no mention of the "click". I honestly thought I had locked it into place. But . . . obviously not. Now when I push the button to run it, the coffee grinder made noise. When I put the coffee in, it grinds. YAY! And . . . now I feel stupid. Had already set up the replacement item. Cancelled that. I've used the grinder now, and found that medium is, to me, VERY fine. Like powdered sugar fine. I knew I'd have to experiment a bit to get the grind right, and that's OK. The Amazon help person was very quick, and did a great job helping me though the procedure of getting a replacement sent and giving me a way to return the product. And, the product works, and does a GREAT job of child/grandparent proofing the thing so people don't stick body parts into the device to grind up. 4 month addendum: Changed my review to a 1 star. I HATE this thing! It grinds WAY too small on the coarsest setting. Like powdered sugar. And it sticks to everything. I have to wipe the sides of the hopper every time I fill the coffee machine. And now, first time I try to clean out the innards (which it says you are supposed to do periodically) the freaking thing broke - and now only grinds at the finest setting. Can't change it. Finest setting makes mud in my coffee maker. And the "locking" mechanism never DID get easy to use. Totally disappointed! Going to buy a different grinder. I used to love Mr. Coffee products. Never again. This was a really annoying piece of crap.

An affordable grinder for a solid cup of coffee!
So far, this little device has made me happy. About a year ago, I began to give up on pre-ground coffee, such as the canned stuff and k-cups for our Keurig machine. Now, don't get me wrong...the laziness inside of me - from time to time - prefers to drag myself from my slumber down to my kitchen and drop a k-cup in the machine with pretty blue lights and produce a mediocre cup of coffee. But, I picked up a French press on Amazon and a hand grinder (German-made, apparently high quality...should be for the money); and I found myself in heaven. But, that also became a pain: boiling water, pouring it into the press; pressing; cleaning the press; eh...not fun. Then came the big, bright idea - why not just buy an electric grinder? Now, I may not have the palate that some seem to claim on here (many of which probably can't tell the difference between a cheap cup and one that's not), but I know what tastes good and bad and what amount of coffee and water works well to produce a cup that I do like. With that said, I've found this (quite small) contraption both easy-to-use and producing of decent grinds. I haven't fumbled through all of the settings; but I'm already quite pleased for the quality of grinds for drip and French press coffee. I'm yet to try this for finer grinds...for say, a latte or cappuccino, so I'll have to come back and update you at that time. However, in the meantime, it's really quite hard to give this anything other than an acceptable rating; and for what it's produced so far, I'll give it five stars. By the way, it also has those really spiffy blue lights, and it's quite easy to clean, load and manipulate the settings. And, I really like the little brush that rests on top of the grind bin - that little guy works surprisingly well! Oh, and as you'll notice in one of my photos, it's so fast and easy that I just use a refillable k-cup now...my k-cup holder is awfully naked... More review to come...but hope this helps in the meantime! UPDATE: May 19, 2016: I've had this for a while now, and let me tell you, it's gotten a pretty good workout. I've had no issues with the machine; it grinds, grinds, and grinds. Coffee comes out pretty consistent, and yes some of the grounds can vary ever so slightly, but I don't believe that you're going to find a grinder that's going to produce PERFECT, consistent grinds all the time, especially at this price. Still satisfied, and highly recommend.

Great Price For a Burr Grinder, But You Get What You Pay For
I waited quite some time after purchasing this product before reviewing it, because I wanted to see how it would perform over time. I've now been using it every day for nearly a year, and I think I can confidently say that it's worth purchasing, but with some caveats. First, the "pros": The price tag is amazing - this is only about $5 bucks more than a cheap blade grinder, and requires significantly less work (which is important in a pre-caffeinated state). The hopper holds about half a pound of beans, and acts as a nice buffer to let you know when you need to buy more coffee. The dial makes it easy to make a consistent pot of coffee, regardless of who's brewing it - just set the dial to the number of cups you want to make and push the button. And the grind itself is very easy to adjust. However, there are a few "cons", most of which could be fixed with some engineering changes. For starters, the lid to the ground coffee reservoir contains an indent for a cleaning brush/scoop. This little tool is not optional - if the reservoir and lid aren't cleaned after basically every use, finely ground coffee dust will build up and block the flow of coffee, preventing it from actually grinding any beans. However, this problem could be largely solved by moving the brush storage indent from the reservoir lid to the hopper lid, as the irregular shape of the indent on the under side of the reservoir lid is what creates a space for coffee dust to collect and build up on in the first place. It wouldn't completely eliminate the need to clean the reservoir with a brush periodically, but it would certainly lessen it. Also, the hopper itself feels like it needs a little steeper angle. Occasionally, beans will get jammed, and you have to give the whole device a little shake in order to clear it. This isn't terribly frequent, but it's frequent enough that you can't start the beans grinding and leave the room to go do something else, or you might come back to find that it jammed up halfway through, and now you don't know how much coffee you have ground. Another challenge with the hopper is that the lid simply rests on top of it. It doesn't screw on or fit tightly against any sort of gasket, and if you bump it or turn it upside down, coffee beans will spill out all over your counter and floor. It's a mistake you'll only make once, but it's a frustrating one to learn. The biggest issue, though, is that the hole that ground coffee comes out of eventually gets clogged with coffee dust and needs to be cleaned. When this happens, there's no warning; your grinder just simply stops grinding coffee, even though you can hear the burrs spinning. Cleaning the reservoir (especially the lid) with the included brush after every use dramatically cuts down on how frequently this maintenance needs to be performed, but it doesn't eliminate it. And cleaning that little port isn't necessarily easy (especially when you're tired and trying to get ready for work). I've learned to keep a package of bamboo grilling skewers by my coffee supplies, as these tend to be about the diameter and sturdiness needed to clean it out and get things flowing again. You will inevitably dump espresso-fine coffee dust all over your counter when cleaning it... that's just sort of a fact of life. Overall, I'd still buy this product again over a blade grinder, especially at this price. The convenience of being able to push a button and have the exact right amount of coffee grounds is vastly faster and easier than carefully measuring out the right quantity of beans into a blade grinder every morning. But this is a very entry level burr grinder, and at times it feels like the people who designed it didn't actually use it for more than a day or two before sending it off to market. If you can afford a higher-end model, it would be worth splurging. But if it's this or a $20 blade grinder, this burr mill is the way to go.

A good machine that does a good job
This is my second of these grinders. The first one I bought in a store. I'd been wanting a burr grinder but didn't want to pay the higher price that I kept finding. When I saw this affordable one on the shelf, I decided to try it. And I was very pleased with the way it ground coffee. It performed admirably for about two years -- until one day I discovered the hole where the ground coffee came out was plugged up like a brick. In trying to clean away the clog of grounds, I took a couple of screws out to get further down into the machine and apparently disconnected something about the safety switches that I could never get back into place. So I bought this replacement through Amazon. I've learned, now, how to better clean the machine to keep the clogging from happening. (Be sure to read their instructions for cleaning, and do it regularly.) The malfunction of the first machine was entirely my fault. I was pleased enough with my first Mr. Coffee Grinder to buy a second one. Here are some tips: Unless you're making several pots of coffee each day, DO NOT KEEP BEANS IN THE HOPPER. They will dry out and lose potency. Unused beans should be kept in a vacuum-sealed container (squeezed-shut air-tight zipper-locked plastic bag is good) and away from heat and light. Also, I don't rely on the Mr. Coffee Grinder method of cup-measurement. To make sure my brew is exactly what I want, I measure both water and beans by weight. And, I've found, not all brands and roasts weigh the same. A cup of beans of one brand may weigh more than a cup of another brand. So you have to determine, for each roast and brand, how much coffee to grind for the water used. (I recently tried a new brand, which I didn't like as well, for which I had to grind 55 grams to get a comparable strength.) For the brand and roast I most often use (Kirkland's medium roast), my basic formula is 1000 milliliters of water for 44 grams of coffee (weight of water x .044 for weight of beans). Simply measure out the amount of beans you want to grind and put that in the hopper to grind. Burr grinders are not quiet, so don't expect it to be. But it isn't loud enough to scare the cat, so it isn't too bad. This grinder works very well and, with proper maintenance, should give you good service for years.
