Vai Not Give It A Try?
I've been playing the guitar on and off for almost 20 years, and I've never been able to grasp music theory. Inevitably, my playing plateaued and I became completely bored with the instrument that I love. However, my love for the music of Frank Zappa - as well as my decision to finally buy an Ibanez Jem - has rekindled my passion for the guitar, and Vai's 'Vaideology' (which arrived today) with all of its wonderful illustrations, tips, advice, and encouragement is just what I need to push me beyond my musical limitations. I would strongly recommend it to any guitarist honest and courageous enough to admit to themselves that they could be better.

Nice book by Steve Vai
Fast delivery, well packaged, etc. Quite a comprehensive and simple introduction to music theory and Vai seems to be able to express himself in a fairly coherent way. I think it’s aimed at beginners to intermediate level music theory enthusiasts but I also think anyone can take something away from this. His artwork scattered throughout is also rather interesting. Happy with purchase, thanks

For the intermediate guitarist.
A very good theory book for the intermediate guitarist. Steve makes it interesting to learn music theory, not the most easiest thing to do for some of us!

Any Steve Vai fan will love this!
Ended up buying two copies. Bought both as gifts. Good value for money. Beauitful illustrations by Vai. The recipients are both fans and play guitar. They loved. Good quality paperback.

Good content let down by the quality & quantity of the book itself
I'd wanted this book ever since I first heard that Vai was going to be releasing it. I've been playing guitar for 15+ years now but have never delved that deeply into theory. I've always been more of a 'feel' player up to now. The actual content of this book is very good, although you wouldn't have to go too far on the world wide web to find similar information for free. My problem is with the quality of the book itself. The paper it's printed on is of very poor quality, it's so flimsy that coupled with Amazon's poor quality packaging my copy of the book arrived bent in half! I couldn't be bothered to send it back for the same thing to happen again so for now i've made-do with bending it back into shape myself. It's not a very thick book either, which considering the price of admission is a little disappointing. At the end of the day it's a good book for guitar theory beginners and intermediates. I do get the feeling you're paying the price for the 'Vai' name on the cover though, which I don't begrudge too much as let's be honest...the guy is a genius and I could listen to him talk and play for days. If you're looking for something more comprehensive and of better quality, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. Ted Greene is tough to beat in my opinion.

Complete, concise, and useful
There are a lot of books on music theory on the market, even ones that have a special take on their application to guitar. Steve does a great job of stuffing a ton of essential theory into less than 100 pages that should make most academics jealous. His explanations are what you'd expect from a practitioner. In additon, I really liked that he provides a lot of useful exercises about how to go beyond either the academic knowledge OR focus on shapes of scales and chords to shift the focus into the experiential domain. Some people may scoff at his descriptions, thinking that they are too fluffy or "New Age" to be practical, but this is something that they'd be very wrong about. I use many of the techniques that he describes with my students and can report that they do indeed work. This is a book that you not only need to read, but need to do the exercises over and over again. The good part is that they're not complex exercises and they're fun! Take Steve's advice: Do the exercises and spend time with it, don't just do the minimum and rush to get to the next part. This is well worth a lot more than it's cover price.

Want to learn from a vituoso? This is THE book.
An incredible resource from the Maestro himself. Music theory is patiently and skillfully explained; an invaluable asset for any guitarist serious about getting to grips with the basics and beyond. Beautifully illustrated too.
