Shop Iron 16023 3/8" Drive Damaged Bolt and Stud Extractor | Works on 1/4-Inch to 1/2-Inch Studs

Excellent tool. Worked like a charm to extract 2 forty year old exhaust manifold studs (10mm dia,) on an aluminium motorcycle cylinder. Made in Taiwan, but seems to be fairly well built. I am looking around for other studs to pull out now just for fun ... :-) It basically looks like a chuck from a drill - but with some teeth to give it grip on the stud. I squirted a bit of WD40 on the stud first and let it sit for a bit. Then I used 2 wrenches to tighten it down on the stud (my stud had a non-threaded section in the middle - so it did not damage any threads). You will need a 36mm and a 24mm (or a 3/8 in drive - rachet handle for example) to tighten this puppy down. It states that it is suitable for "impact" wrench use, but I just used the wrenches and it worked fine. The key is to make sure its not slipping - so tighten it down good and make sure there is no debris on the teeth in the tool which will affect the grip (ie. metal scrapings from previous stud removal). The package states the tool can go down to 1/4 inch in diameter - but have not tested that yet. Definately worth the money - and proves the old saying that having the right tool for the job makes all the difference... Pro: - Decent quality and value - Solid build - Handles multiple diameters (adjustable) as indicated in description. Cons: - None - Clearance if you have a tight spot to work in (which was not my case).

It did the job I used it for, which was removing severely rusted, broken exhaust manifold flange studs that were 18 yo OE. Whether the fact I soaked the studs in penetrating oil for a week helped, it nonetheless removed them. Given it's size, it is limited in applications. You'll need a couple of inches, or so, of clear space around stud to be extracted and it's range of stud sizes is limited. You need the space to get the puller on as much of that stud as possible. It is open all the way through for long studs which would require a wrench or cut the stud down for ratchet/impact. Did not say whether it was rated for impact wrench, but it was what I used to drive it and it held up. You do need a couple of wrenches to loosen it to release the extracted stud once out It grips/bites that hard. Of course the impact wrench may have compounded that that. I was hoping to not have to remove the manifolds and drill them out and the fact I had enough clearance around the flange was helpful. Finally an automotive repair that went off without a hitch. I've seen this advertised elsewhere on Web at *significantly* more than here and unless you're a full-time wrench it may very well sit more than used. Either way, if one ever needed it, you'd have it. Well worth the investment, even if used one time and it works. However, with Murphy's law, it could snap the stud off flush and then you're drilling anyway. Work smarter, not harder.

I'm giving this 5 stars because it was the only tool out of three broken bolt extractors that worked in my confined space. I had a hard to reach bolt that broke when removing my trim motor on my outboard. The trim bracket sits very close to the bolt making it hard to reach and the motor tilted up is directly above the bolt making access even more difficult This tool was small enough and strong enough to help get the bolt removed. It saved me a lot of extra work. I definitely recommend this tool

Tool broke literally in half first try on a tiny bolt...very cheaply built ..DO NOT BUY

Used this product to remove cut off rusted screws from a trailer frame. It worked very well, gripped tight for the first dozen. Then the jaws misaligned and was useless. Be careful when attaching. Bought another brand to finish the job.

Used this to remove a stud from an exhaust manifold, with an air impact on the end of it. The tool worked great, no problem. Be warned, though, since it's self-tightening, you may find the stud stuck in the jaws of the thing. Also, it bears mentioning the threads on the stud will be annihilated by this extraction method. I tried to remove the extracted stud using a pipe wrench on the body of the tool and a box wrench on the bolt side, and it didn't budge. So (here's your warning) I stuck the impact gun on the bolt side and gave it a little bump of air... bad idea! It blew the retainer/ snap ring out of the tool. Amazingly, once I found it, I was able to reassemble and reuse the tool. So it definitely works, but will require finesse to bust the crusty stud out of the jaws afterward. A sturdy buddy to hold the tool in a pipe wrench while you whang on a box end wrench with a hammer would take care of it, or a good bench vise if you don't have any friends.

This tool is amazing. Was attempting to change exhaust manifold gasket and one of the old screws broke off. Not a drillable location. This gift from heaven bit hard into what was left of the bolt and out it came! I was pretty ecstatic.

Get it so much worth it in love it this extractor took out the most burnt looking oil stud from my thermostat housing I was skeptical it wasn't going to work but it did it was in a tight space too and took it out like nothing get it won't regret it

I purchased this to remove turbo adapter exhaust studs from a 2017 F150 Ecoboost .. This tool is a MUST for this job, I used a 2 foot long 1/2” breaker bar with the extractor and worked like a charm.. Worth every penny ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
