The stories are written beautifully, rhyming with a rhythm that sets the pace. This ensures that as an adult I do not get bored reading the same stories over and over again as the more familiar the story becomes the more I can work on my expression and how I deliver giving me almost as joyful an experience as that of my son listening to them. I feel excited when he brings me a book and then we can have a short bonding session over the story before he goes off to play again. The books describe simple everyday scenes and experiences that a child might encounter helping them make sense of the world around them, mixed with magical characters like dragons, witches, Santa etc.Alex Schefflers artwork is beautiful complements the stories perfectly. The same characters often pop up in different books, whether it be the Gruffalo Child’s stick man in his own story or simply a squirrel and a frog. This helps my son who is fifteen months old develop his own narrative. He does not understand the words I am reading but gets plenty from the rhythm and my intonation whilst building his own story and understanding from the pictures, he is always pointing different characters out to me or finding them when I ask where they are. He loves books and I think that these books enhance a joy of reading and learning. He brings the books to me time and time again.The verses in Supeworm are simple and short, making it great for younger toddlers and moments when attention spans are low. The images of everyday garden insects are great allowing children to recognise them if they have seen them outdoors before. My little boy loves pointing out the spiders in their webs and has even noticed some that I didn't see. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of Donaldson's best in my opinion *by A***T on 20 March 2019* We own quite a few Donaldson/ Scheffler books - not all of them, but a fair number - and in my humble opinion the quality can range from superb (Stick Man, The Gruffalo, Zog) to bang average (Gruffalo's Child, Room on the Broom). Only my opinion! I'm pleased to report that Superworm is a real winner and I'm sorry it took us so long to buy it (I'm assuming its been out for a while). Some excellent, interesting characters for the child to engage with (especially the "villains"!), plenty of supporting cast, an enjoyable tale and colourful, vibrant illustrations. Our three year old is loving it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Lovely Story about the Power of Friendship *by P***A on 26 August 2015* Is there a better combination than Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler in the world of children's books? Whenever my children spot a new book in Scheffler's illustration style they know they are in for a treat.Superworm is an odd little hero but hero he is, he saves lots of his friends by contorting himself into various positions, before he finds himself in peril at the hands of Wizard Lizard, will he become lunch for a crow?As always Julia Donaldson's rhyming story is a pleasure to read and one that lends itself to reading aloud and being learned by heart. My children very quickly started to join in with the chants of Superworm and my five year old soon started to recite the words along with my reading.Scheffler's illustrations are of their usual high standard, we love that you can spot other characters from the Donaldson/Scheffler canon amidst the pages. Can you find the Gruffalo?
