Great resource that doubles as a basic reference

*by K***. on Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2015*

Excellent resource for Java programmers looking to extend their skills into JavaFX GUI programming. Though it doesn't have the depth of a JavaFX reference book, it could be used as one while you learn the basics of the subject. There's some humor scattered throughout, but unlike some of the Dummies books, you won't be wading through mounds of unnecessary comedy to find the information you need.Although I had an opportunity to check this book out in person before buying so I could be sure it would be useful to me, for those who can't do that and are still left unsure even with the Amazon preview, the target audience for this book is programmers who are already comfortable in Java and Swing (the standard Java GUI API), and want to see what JavaFX has to offer. If you don't know whether that's you...it probably isn't, at least not yet.As for the book itself, there are a few minor, non-confusing example-code typos, but overall this book is great. It details how to program things like menus, tables, and buttons, and delves into using CSS for applying custom backgrounds, colors, and styles to the various elements in a program. In the last sections it also gives you a glimpse into JavaFX's 3D capabilities, and shows you how to use layout panes for more advanced and precise scene arrangement. All in all, this was well-worth the money. Highly recommended.

    Excellent Primer/Description of JavaFX

*by J***E on Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2016*

This book serves as an excellent primer to the JavaFX GUI Platform. If I were to rate it, I would give it a 4 1/2 / 5.The author very clearly explains of the Java FX API, and how to programmatically design stunning GUIs.If you truly wanted to do all of your JavaFX work strictly programmatically, this exposition of the JavaFX API is for you.It is not merely a regurgitation of the JavaFX API documentation; the author takes care in walking through JavaFX in a practical as well theoretical light, providing the reader with insight into the processes involved in JavaFX programming that aren't necessarily straightforward to JavaFX novices, even if they are experienced Software Engineers.Where this book is wanting and looses its mark is in its failure to discuss FXML/SceneBuilder, a profoundly more convenient means of quickly creating GUIs (in the eyes of many) & a better way to separate application logic from design code (supporting the MVC and other methods). Although not a part of the JavaFX API itself, FXML/SceneBuilder (at least FXML) is without question required knowledge for persons with any intention on being seriously considered an expert/professional in the domain of JavaFX.My recommendation is to read this text FIRST then dive straight into Pro JavaFX by Apress (most advanced modern JavaFX8 text available). After these two and some steady, serious development, one may engage in the conversation of whether or not they are an expert in JavaFX.~ Best Wishes,[...]

I'd say it was almost inspiring.

*by M***E on Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2015*

I've had a chance to work my way through enough chapters to be able to recommend this book as a pretty good guide to begin programming in JavaFX. I don't think it will teach you Java though - so prior programming experience would be helpful. My main interest in purchasing this book was to help me convert a program I had written in Processing to Java so I could run it on the desktop. I was successful and have to credit this book for it's clarity, even though I must have read the same chapters 3 or 4 times before getting it. I used NetBeans8 and had no problem compiling the sample code to date. My only quibble, which applies to almost all of these coding books, the examples are too small and don't provide a very big picture of how classes work together.
