Firstly & most importantly I did not sell my kidney or lung or part of my liver to buy this. I bought it the boring way by saving up.Is the price worth it, YES. Only people who haven't experienced good sound or do not know what good sound is like will balk at the price. Audio is one of the best places to put your money since the product lasts not years but decades. Take care of it like you would of a high end watch & it will last a long time.Although I do admit that because of the current exchange rates its more expensive.Buy a new flagship phone & that’ll be on its last legs after 2 years where as the 846 is just getting started.Buy a good laptop and that would be outdated in 5 years’ time whereas you’ll still be learning that the 846 had more on tap which you didn’t know because your old DAC was not up to snuff.Buy a flagship TV or white goods they all be obsolete long before the 846 is obsolete. No normie bats an eyelid at a $1000 camera which let’s be honest is just slightly above the bottom rung in the product line. That 1000$ camera will be outdated in 3-4 years as something much better will have come along & you weren’t really using a brands flagship item were you.I've had this for 18+ months at the time of writing this review so the new toy syndrome has well & truly worn off.Let me just state that EVERYTHING sounds better when you hear them through the SE846, you don't exclusively need WAV or AIFF files, 320kbps mp3, Youtube videos, music streaming, Netflix, Prime Video everything sounds better. Now lets talk sound signature.Excellent throughout the frequency range. All the details you could hope for. A natural, open, grain free, airy, fast, resolving sound that is non-fatiguing to listen to for hours. Genre agnostic. Superb frequency response.Let me explain the sound signature. If you have listened to the HD650 on a high end amp with a resolving DAC its like that but with MUCH MUCH better bass extension & bass power, think HD650 with the most coherent and well behaved subwoofer coupled with an airier top end. The individual notes are more defined in the SE846.If you have listened to HD650 with sonarworks & + 1.5db on bass its like that with better transients and more sharply carved audio notes. The HD650 is not hazy or less detailed just softer around the edges of the notes. These differences are I think more to do with Balanced Armature vs Dynamic. Think of the 650 in this comparison as the best film SLR camera where as the 846 is the best in DSLR out there. Both cameras will take great images but will have a slightly different flavor and take on rendition of detailsWhen using the HD 650 with sonarworks(age compensation off) the general frequency response curve (not extension) of the 650 is super close & similar to the stock 846 but the 846 is faster and airier still.Sound more words on the Sound: It's a totally magical, crystal clear experience, like a staring into the bluest lagoon in a tropical dream you once had. You can play the most complex track & everything is rendered beautifully. Every individual note & frequency has its own space to flow without ever blurring or stepping onto each other. No matter how upfront the singer or an individual instrument is you can hear everything in the mix with perfect clarity. It's the subtle tones that stand out the most, with even the softest strokes and beats coming through with the kind of sonic definition you normally only get from a live band. You can place instruments in the space around you, the sound coming through with significant presence, articulating cleanly without any hint of harshness even when cranked up to very high volumes. It became far too loud for my ears long before I detected any distortion - amazing.Switching between the 846 and other favourite headphones told the whole story. It's very easy to get used to mediocre sound (it's all relative, folks!). With many pairs of headphones, you can, with in your mind, separate out the midrange from the high and low ends. You can detect gaps in frequencies, along with areas that have, often not-so-subtly, been beefed up to mask a lack of definition. But the Shure 846 have no detectable weakness in this way. If there's anything there, it's beyond my ears. And their output is very very flat indeed. If you're a bass hunter, you love them, if you are a neutrality fiend you’ll love them, if you crave detail you’ll fall in love. The performance is beyond reproach.Spot on timbre, superb tonality, EXCELLENT timing & dynamics. Pin point imaging & transparency. These are the most genre agnostic headphones I’ve ever listened to. Rock, metal, electronic, jazz, sappy audiophile records all sound superb.I’ve owned 20-30-40k in ear headphones & they all sound MUCH BETTER than 3-5-10k headphones which I’ve also owned. I was expecting better sound from these since they cost a lot and you know what they deliver. Its not just a 5-10% improvement, its MASSIVE. Its so profound that all the other headphones barring the HD650 have been rendered useless. Its super hard going back to lesser headphones since you can clearly hear what is missing. The SE846 is brilliant, mesmerizing and spellbinding. They're magical and captivating and wondrous and amazing. I love them.I can't really finish this review without discussing the price again because let's face it, it's an unignorably huge sum. These are flagship reference-level headphones and they're for people who're willing to pay to get the best. That pretty much rules out the vast majority of people on this planet. But can you really put a price on perfect audio reproduction? It's also about personal preference, and where you decide to put YOUR money, so if you can appreciate the extra refinement and reference audio is your thing, yes they are worth the money.Things to keep in mind:Tips make a huge difference. Shure olives make it slightly darker sounding with recessed vocals. Soundstage is smaller, less holographic.Spinfilts ruin the bass not only in terms of power, slam & punch but in details as well. Bass notes have much more smearing when using the spinfits. There is some sibilance that is also introduced with the spinfits. AVOID.The best tips are the triple flange. Things that improve with the triple flange.1) Soundstage grows from being just around the ear to shoulder width.2) It creates a more accurate ambience of the recording. Its just something you have to experience I can’t really explain it.3) The slight mid bass hump that is present with the olives is banished & the deep bass goes even deeper.4) The vocals are more intimate and clearer.5) Overall airiness increases.6) Movie dialogue gains more body & is much more legible.7) Sound isolation.I’ve some 24/96 recordings quite a few 16/44 CD rips & the same on 320kbps mp3. With many headphones which are all audiophile class the difference is not perceptible, it just isn’t. With these you can immediately tell the higher res source file but it doesn’t murder the mp3. either.SOURCE MATTERS: With the low 8 Ohm impedance I was expecting this to pick hiss from everything but to my surprise hiss is not an issue. What is an issue is output impedance of the device. Plug it into anything that has greater than 0 ohm output impedance & the highs are KILLED. Plug it into something that has close to 5-6 ohm output impedance & the sound becomes slow, syrupy & dark.Make sure your source device has less than 0 ohm or close to 0 Ohm output impedance.Later models do not come with the pelican case you see in many unboxing’s. Rest of it is there.
