Another CRH book
If you’re an avid CRH reader or if this is the first of her books that you have ever read, you will love this book! This book has feelings of stubbornness, kindness, regret, denial, etc. expressed in the book through the characters. Love how the author expresses the characters.

Two Girls in Trouble
I would say 4 1/2 stars - easily the best book I've read in a while. Two young sisters Carly (16) and Jen (12) try to walk their way from New Mexico to California to find their their mother's ex-boyfriend after their family (such as it is) collapses. Ultimately they are exhausted, starving, dehydrated and unable to gone on when they stumble upon an old Native American woman living on a reservation, who takes them in. Lots more plot but don't want to spoil the suspense too much. The book is very well written and engaging. I love this part of the country, so enjoyed the descriptions of the geography. The characters are very well-drawn and realistic. The girls' mother, Jocelyn , loves them, but tends to put her boyfriends first and has made every made bad choice imaginable in her romantic involvements. You want to dislike her, but don't. Teddy, the ex-boyfriend, is fairly sympathetic through out - even when his secret is revealed he is more pathetic than anything else. Another review thought it odd that Carly would not believe Jen's allegations against Teddy, but to me this makes perfect sense as Teddy has really been the only caring father figure the girls have ever known. Carly has been through a lot living with her mother and has a tough and independent shell that is hard for her to give up, even when love is offered. The reservations sheriff, Alvin, is a little TOO good hearted, but that doesn't spoil the book at all.I mean this isn't War and Peace or the Sun Also Rises of course, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars, but for popular fiction, its excellent and I would highly recommend it.

Author understands people
Easy to pick up and read even in the middle of the story. Different backgrounds, different cultures yet the writer lets us learn and grow with the characters. She understands the humanity that unites us all so we with the characters can weather the plot twists and challenges in our world. I think this is a great young adult read.

Great Book
I read this book in one day because I couldn't stop. There are many twists to the story and includes several different cultural issues. It also sorts a lot of psychological points of thinking on the part of the various characters. The author uses simple chronological dialog, but blends the time frames so that they eventually all come together in the story history and, hopefully, will continue into the future.

Main character too cranky
This is one of my favorite authors but I had some issues with this book. The main character is a smart mouth teen and hard to like much of the time. I also do not like stories that jump back and forth between past and present. This was the most annoying thing of all. Overall a decent story but not up to par with her other books that I have enjoyed in the past.

Interesting
The story was told well by starting in present time and then previous time, and then back again. The descriptions of events were rather unbelievable. However, the last chapters were well done as to all Carly needed to learn and could be good advice for many.

This is too good
to not give five stars to, though the subject matter is hard, from start to finish. I’ve got a lot in common with Carly, as a child and still as a 74 year old single man. I never could ask for help and do everything in my power to not do so now. I don’t suppose it is a thing I will ever change, which will have an impact on the rest of my life as well, but that’s me. I do know how to say thank you and always have, I just try to avoid situations where it is necessary.Carly’s had a hard life, a horrible mother more interested in men than her children. I’ve known a lot of people like that both men and women, I worked 42 years in a system that dealt with those issues. I won’t go through all of the issues the book brings up but the traditions of Native American peoples, particularly those of the Hopi I am somewhat familiar with and I do think they have the right outlook on life, better than any male created religion anyway.I’m a little disappointed Carly didn’t believe her sister when she told her she’d been molested, I’m a little disappointed she didn’t stay in California, let herself go into the child care system, go on to college and make a life there. That said, it’s understandable she had to get back to her sister, Jen, four years younger. Not having full siblings that would not have been an issue for me, but it’s different with sisters, I think. I’m glad she finally found some people who actually cared about her, every child deserves that and far too many never do find that and end up on the streets or dead. So, this has a happy ending with potential but no guarantees, a lot like life. Great book though, as always, thanks to Catherine.

Powerful message
I have enjoyed many books by this author. This story pulled at my heart strings. I cried many times for Carly’s lack of loving support but truly admired her tough determination. It’s a story I would enjoy following the characters progress. Thank you for a good tale well told.

Bom livro
Estória legal. Muito interessante para quem quer conhecer o outro lado da fronteira com os EUA e entender que são seres humanos que tentam atravessá-la.

Interesting book.
I'd recommend this book to teens and young adults. It was interesting and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen. I was sad when it was done because I really enjoyed it.

Very enjoyable although I guessed the ending but none the less well written. I will definitely be reading more of her books.
