A mixture of gloss and retro in ways that doesn't always work
I admire what Piskor is trying to do here: take the X-men narrative and make it coherent in a style that reflects classic comics. This volume moves from the classic era of X-men's silver age to the Giant-sized reboot and into the Claremont era which defined the X-men for that point forever. The issue is that it feels rushed and plots that are were complicated are reduced, added too, and made more seamless. Piskor's art is interesting and very retro but lacks some of the strength of Cockrum and Byrne. Furthermore, that becomes slightly more obvious when Piskor's recoloring of Giant-sized one is included in the package. Furthermore, Piskor has to consolidate more: this covers Uncanny X-men 94-186 and covers some key Claremont works like the Pheonix and Dark Pheonix saga. Piskor does cover more issues which have a more complicated plot and character development in a similar space. While I do still appreciate what Piskor's attempt to make a singular and definitive continuity, I would take the discontinuity of the whole and the developed arcs in the original as my definitive so far.

A mixture of retro & modern that always works.
A mixture of retro & modern that always works. If you are an old school X-Men fan, this comic is for you to rehash and reinforce the classic tales with new art that combines modern art techniques with classic styles. If you are new to X-Men these comics give a condensed and well-paced history of the X-Men since 1963. I’m buying this for my sons & daughters once they come of age. Piskor’s art is nostalgic & captivating. Paying homage to classic Kirby & Claremont while making his own version & style (utilizing modern art techniques & technology). Recommend for any Marvel fan, it is a MUST have if you call yourself an X-Fan in any regard. Brilliant. Beautiful. Compelling.

expected more
some of the recaps of certain story lines are off. I actually went back to my original comics to make sure.

I love this book!
If you haven't picked up this book and are a fan of the X-Men and bronze age Marvel Comics in general, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK! Excellent presentation, I love the retro-art style and the oversized format fits this book great with all the detail in the artwork. A+

Possibly the best book of the series, and Ed Piskor doesn't disappoint
I love everything about this series - the oversized volumes, the unique Ed Piskor art style, the nostalgic look to the artwork & page design. I also think this is the best volume out of the series, though it was also one of my favorite eras of the Uncanny X-Men line.

Good, but not as great as Vol 1
I loved Vol 1 - the art style and overall presentation felt both retro and fresh. The same is true for Vol 2, but the actual recap of many story lines at once doesn't work nearly as well here. The number of character introductions and plots make it feel disjointed (and occasionally confusing) even though it's still a very enjoyable experience to look at.

Gorgeous art and a wonderful introduction into X-Men.
This along with the first volume lays down the early history of the X-Men in an easy to read book. The X-Men comics are known for being rather convoluted and this streamlines their stories rather well. A lot of love went into the creation of this book and if you're an X-Men fan or a fan of comics, it's worth picking up.

Great book, but missing a few details
I'm loving the bigger format and details like the paper stock, but am disappointed the appendices from the original issues' back-pages haven't been included here. Looking forward to Piskor wrapping this later in the year and seeing what his next project could be.
