Is it necessary to configure the multiplus or just nice to do? I was hoping it would be plug and play and forget about it!?

This is a VE Direct cable, I don't know about all but my multiplus doesn't have a VE Direct port but rather VE Bus which is a different adapter (MK3-USB) As for configuration they will generally work without configuration but there may be some settings you wish to change such at low voltage cut-offs and charging values etc.

what is the length of the cable?

It’s now installed behind some panelling, but I think it was ~2m.
