Entertaining, illuminating and precise.
Our universe is an amazing ‘place’. It houses unimaginably large and strange objects. Since Galileo and Newton, we have come to know a lot about the universe. We have realised how insignificant our world is in comparison to the stellar objects it contains. At the same time, we have no clue about most things in the universe. Having a glimpse of what we know and what we don’t know can be a humbling experience at least and a mind-blowing one if you have a little more than a passing interest. In Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, Neil deGrasse Tyson has done a remarkable job at giving us that glimpse in a way everyone can understand. The book starts at the big-bang. “In the beginning, nearly fourteen billion years ago, all the space and all the matter and all the energy of the known universe was contained in a volume less than one-trillionth the size of the period that ends this sentence.” It explains how the universe expanded and what it contains now. Mr. Tyson ensures that what we don’t understand in the cosmos—things like dark matter and dark energy—are as interesting as the things we do have some understanding about—like stars, black holes, asteroids, planets, etc. Towards the end, he explains how our Earth might look to the aliens and how they might find us—if any intelligent life ever exists out there—before ending the book with thought-worthy reflections on the cosmic perspective. The book is thoroughly enjoyable even for someone who is not much familiar with physics. If you are someone on whom the night sky normally has a thought provoking effect, it is a must-read.

Must read for every astronomy aficionado!
In the unimaginably vast, inhospitable territory of the universe, even the pebble-sized asteroids are said to hurtle faster than the fastest vehicles that we human have here on earth. It is needless then to elaborate on the impact they can create upon collision with any object on their way. This little book by Neil DeGrasse Tyson is one such impactful work that will leave a deep impact on our minds, shattering away our ignorance and ego. I have always been fascinated by whom I consider as the trinity of scientific, rational writing – Christopher Hitchens, Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Richard Dawkins. And, this is the first proper work of Mr. Tyson I had laid my hands upon. I must admit that I was thrilled throughout. Easy to understand, interesting to read and intriguing enough to leave you wanting for more, this is a brilliant read. The author commences the book right at the time our Universe was born and narrates the timeline of its evolution, its constituents, the current state and its probable future. Scattered along the pages are lessons on quantum physics to cosmic black-holes. The author ends the book in a deeply contemplative mode, pondering over our place in the universe, our pitiably petty quarrels and possible changes in attitude that could stem from inculcating a cosmic perspective in our minds and lives. Must read for every astronomy aficionado!

Books is awesome (pirated print)
This book is amazing…but it’s pirated one. Ink on the pages are scrambled in few pages and quality is not great.

A Read To Remember
NDT belongs to the icons of modern cosmology that has mastered the art of seeding interest in science among the masses. It takes truly prodigal skills to pack such an unbelievable amount of information about the cosmos into such a short book while making it enjoyable and undeniably beautiful in structure and composition. Even though I have my qualms with many theories on Dark Matter and Dark Energy put forward by the modern astrophysicists it is very refreshing to see NDT admitting that astrophysicists are quantifying the unknown fully acknowledging how irritating it is to put blind trust in front of rationality especially in the field of science which is built on accuracy and rationality. The feeling I get while watching NDTs shows as well as reading his book is that feeling of discussing mind bending theories with a friend over a glass of scotch and cigar. He is humorous in presentation, elegant in explanation and humanitarian in his explanations of the significance of insignificance. I only give four stars because I personally don"t agree with the whole Dark Matter hypothesis being remotely linked to the multiverse theories. That argument is a waste of everyone's time...

Ontzettend interessant voor mensen met interesse in astronomie en / of astrofysica. Helder en duidelijk uitgelegd door de welbekende Amerikaanse astrofysicus Neil deGrasse Tyson.
