does it make your microphone work without the amplifier

No . A microphone is just a device to collect sound waves. To amplify it you need something maybe as simple as a bullhorn or plug it into your home stereo or into an amplifier. You cannot just connect a micro phone to a speaker and expect it to work.....they need something to amplify...hope this answer s your question....

What is the total height from the floor to the top of the mic clip if the stand is in its lowest position? I'm trying to find a good stand for kids.

I don't have it available to measure right now, but the discription says 33.5" in lowest position. I believe that is correct. It's a nice solid stand. We are very happy with it.

so Im 5'11 is this mic stand tall enough to stand and record???

First of all. Congratulations on your height. I'm 5'-9. When the stand is fully extended the microphone (Shure 58) is pointing at my forehead. So I'm pretty sure with a tube style recording condenser mic, you'd be fine. It's a well made stand and as good as anything you'd buy at the massive guitar store.

Why is this described as having a "boom arm"? I see no boom arm in the pics. (A boom arm connects on a pivot and goes outward at an adjustable angle.)

That is a very good question. If that is the exact item I ordered and received, it certainly does not have any such feature.

Yes, there are cheaper mic stands. No, it’s not light or easy to carry. So why buy it? Because it lasts and is a classic. Very solid stands, I tend to lean into my stands a lot so these hold me pretty well. Light enough to move with me, heavy enough to not send me flying! Very easy to set up, and easy to tighten even with reduced grip strength. They are definitely amazing value, so much so I’ve actually bought two (one for me one as a gift) and they are height adjustable!
