Q: Can it be opened one handed?

I recently started using a thumb stud that fastens to the blade, and it works perfectly well to open safely using just one hand.

Q: How would this knife be as an EDC steak knife?

Short answer - yes, yes it will work.. But, the edge of a 5Cr15MoV stainless steel blade will get absolutely wrecked, if you use it regularly against a ceramic plate surface. There are other knives, made of a harder stainless steel (4116 and others) that would work much better as steak knives. 5Cr15MoV is a good stainless steel - it can easily be honed to a razor sharp edge, and kept that way with just a little bit of effort (stroping occasionally). Properly cared for, a 5Cr15MoV will easily manage most everyday light work. I once rolled the edge by just scraping down the flashing of a length of polypropylene - but I stroped it back up really quick and easy. And I still carry it every day, even with this knowledge of its limitations - I just work with them instead of against them.

Q: Do you have to pull up the key ring to close it or is there another way?

Yes, you absolutely have to pull the key ring to disengage the ring-lock mechanism - any other effort will likely break the knife. The spring on this knife is lifted by pulling on the ring - ever so slightly. I doubt the ring needs to be pulled higher than the 1/32" clearance between the back of the blade (where it locks) and the plastic body of the handle, where the spring rests flat. Anyone trying to torque back against the spring (hard) by pulling the ring (dramatically) is going to break the ring/spring connection. This ring/spring connection is meant to run quick and slick without any dramatic or extraneous motion required. It locks quickly and holds hard, if you can operate it properly. I regularly pop the connection with my index finger only, using a squeeze movement with the rest of my fingers pulling down on the blade and handle as my index finger (inside the ring) pulls up and back, simultaneously. The ring is also used as a safety stop that won't allow your fingers to ever slide up onto the sharp edge of the blade - because your leading finger is still inside the ring. Some folks really just can't figure this ring-lock mechanism out.. Some people try to loosen this lock-up by pulling on the ring-lock with several pounds of force - because they think it will allow the blade to swing out easier and quicker (and dangerous-er), but it doesn't.. It just breaks the knife.. Run the Kudu properly and it will last for years, decades even..
