Yes, a GPS antenna is required for that.

Q: I am having problems getting my arduino uno to recognize the fona on a consistent basis. could this possibly be a bad pin?

Of course this depends a great deal on the code. I have found that on the units we manufacture, we put in ample delays and resets. Once you get them working, they work reliably.

Q: Are the leds supposed to blink if i connect the board to the laptop through usb cable?

You know I thought I used an Arduino type microprocessor to control it through the shield connection. But you may be able to double-check in the manual that should be online maybe it does have a USB connection to allow you to control it directly from just a PC.
