Perfect!
Sick and tired of press-board furniture, I wanted real wood bookshelves. These caught my attention for simple grace, price and solid appearance. I read the reviews and wasn't deterred by the minor complaints - I can find a hardware store if a wall bracket is missing! I was concerned about the packaging problems that seemed to be common but I could refuse them if they appeared to be damaged. I ordered 3 and they arrived in 2 separate shipments. One box was split open at the tape and the bottom badly dented, one was open but otherwise undamaged and the third was fine. Happily, the inside package was well placed and secure so the shelves were fine. All parts and pieces were there and in excellent condition. I had no problems with assembly but I would advise paying careful attention to the illustrations. The book shelf is meant to be assembled upside-down! To ensure easy installation of the back panels just keep an eye on the slide spacing as you are tightening bolts. The reinforcement straps applied behind the shelf really add a lot of stability to the 'flimsy' back panels. The side walls are not a single board but a well-laminated panel of small boards. If painting, you'll never know; if staining, they will present a somewhat checker-board design which I like but you might not. Still, solid wood not veneer. The individual shelves are very solid and single piece boards. The hardware is well placed, lines up and is heavy duty. I am delighted with all 3 and will buy more from this supplier. I have no complaints about the shelves but stronger tape on the shipping box would be recommended. Price? Worth every penny!

Very nice parawood table, they've made the 3 panel back 1 panel and ours will look great when the finishing is completed.
17 years ago I bought 4 chairs, an end table and a phone table from Lowe's made our of Parawood. We finished them with Minwax Wipe On Poly and we're still using them to this day. They've held up very nearly as well as our oak bedroom suite. Unfortunately, Lowe's quit carrying them shortly after our purchase and we just bought the shortest bookcase from Amazon ourselves. The book case was as easy to assemble as the furniture from 17 years ago and just as nice. A couple comments that should be worthwhile to the newest purchasers: 1. These are not perfect and have a few defects. They're made of wood and are handmade for the most part. Also, while they've been sanded, they do have some glue spots you will need to sand out with some 150 to 180 grit sandpaper BEFORE finishing, as these spots will not take finish. This is not an arduous task, but does take some patience, so if you're looking to assemble and throw some finish on, you may be disappointed. 3. I completed assembly of our shelving unit two days ago, so I have a recent unit. They now come with the back as a single, solid piece though you still have to use a drill to provide screw holes for the backing support brackets. Again, not that hard to do. 4. Finally, these are for "do it yourselfer's" and I'd rate them at the 2 to 3 difficulty level. Not that hard, just take a little patience. Remember, they are wood, they are solid and they have natural wood's natural flaws, part of what makes them interesting in my book. Just take your time, correct the minor flaws, handle the quirks and be patient with the sanding and finishing - you'll be glad you did. Don't forget that there's a lot of information on the web, make use of that if you need when refinishing these.

Good purchase
Bought this bookcase for my son's room. It's good quality except for the back piece. The rest of it feels solid, and it looks nice! It's full of books, homeschool materials, and his art cases. Holding up nicely!

I LOVE IT!!!!
I would buy this again and may do so in the near future. I got the unfinished bookshelf, and it is absolutely beautiful! It is solid wood and very sturdy. The bookshelf was very easy to put together, however, like what some of the other's said in their reviews, the back took a little more work. They provide screws to attach the thin plywood to the back, but the wood is so hard and dense that you really need to drill little holes in it first. Doing that, made it go fast and easy! I just love it! Well worth the money spent! Oh, I was going to paint or stain it, but I haven't done anything just yet, because it's so pretty as is!

Real wood and looks great!
Easy to put together. Looks wonderful and it's not like most furniture you have to put together. It is made of real wood, except for the back panel which we opted not to put on. Love the bookcase and it was a great value. I would highly recommend it.

Solid wood bookcase ready for painting
Sturdy and easy to assemble. Real wood. Thick top and solid shelves. The back is thin but has three vertical supports so it’s not flopping in the breeze. Would buy again if I needed another in this size.

Meh
I almost never write reviews because, frankly, I'm not an expert with regard to most things I buy on Amazon. But I have so many conflicting feelings about this bookcase, I almost feel entitled to use the review feature as online therapy. First the good: this is a very solid, genuine wood bookcase--no particleboard or laminate. I appreciate that the back panel is also made of plywood, not a cardboard panel with a wood print. This is a nice feature that gives an already sturdy bookcase additional stability. The mediocre: given what I have seen similar bookcases sell for at local furniture stores, this bookcase seemed like a great deal when I bought it. I actually planned on buying two, but decided to order just one at first to make sure Amazon could ship an 87 pound box to my apartment without anything getting broken along the way. Mission *mostly* accomplished on that front. The box was pretty dinged up upon arrival, but the packaging inside kept everything pretty safe. There is one crack in the top arch board that may or may not be the result of shipping, but it's a minor crack and I'll just glue it if it starts to spread. The bad: this was a MONSTROUS pain to assemble. I have built bookcases out of plywood in the past, so I am hardly a woodworking neophyte. But putting together this bookcase was profoundly frustrating. The backboard is supposed to slide into a set of grooves on the top and side pieces, but these grooves would not align in a manner that allowed the backboard to slide in. I tried for more than an hour to align these grooves before deciding that widening them at the corners with a dremel bit was going to be the easiest solution. Even then only way I could make the backboards fit was by loosening every assembly screw holding the bookcase together, sliding the backboard into place while jiggling the grooves into alignment, and then securing the backboard with clamps before retightening the assembly screws. (I wish I'd taken a picture of this, but it didn't occur to me at the time--and now that everything is assembled, I'm certainly not going to take it apart again just for documentation purposes.) The peculiar: the measurements of this bookcase do not correspond to those in the product description. The shelves are not 32.67" wide, they are 28.5" wide (see photo); the bookcase is not 12" deep, it is 11" deep; the space between shelves is not 10.52", it is exactly 10". This might seem like nitpicking, but 4.17" x 6 shelves adds up to a lot of missing shelf space--25.02" to be precise. I still would've bought the bookcase if I'd known this in advance, but I don't think this can be brushed off as a description error; it's just plain misleading. Also, for some bizarre and unknown reason, all of the adjustable shelves that arrived with this bookcase have 5mm holes drilled into the undersides at a 45 degree angle. I'm not worried about it, I can patch and stain them; but why are they there? Was this bookcase used and returned, or did someone just drop a drill on every board in the factory? Anyway, all that said, I still like this bookcase. The wood is a nice quality, and it looks great in my living room. But if I weren't fairly confident in my ability to assemble large furniture, I'd probably give this one a pass.
