what is the difference between "blackest black" and "carbon black"?

The difference is the type of pigment that is used. Traditional mascaras use different oxidation states of iron oxides (black, red, and yellow with the red and yellow being only used in the brown shade). In carbon black the black iron oxide pigment is replaced with a carbon compound that has a much deeper more obsidian appearance. Black iron oxides are naturally occurring minerals and vary on the shade their "blackness" where the carbon black is much more consistently deep black.

Has anyone used the black/brown color? Is it a deep brown color or lighter brown?

I have bought this many times . It is dark and not to much difference then the black one. I personally think the color is great.

does this mascara flake or smudge by the end of the day?

I love and use l'Oreal Voluminous mascara exclusively, but I have found that on me the Carbon Black does smudge. Using the primer helps, but I avoid this color. I haven't experienced smudging with any other color and right now am using brownish black. It's a nice daytime color. (the Carbon Black is a great color for dramatic nighttime use, and it may not smudge on you! Worth a try!).

The brush doesnt get in to seperate and define lashes...Doesnt have a dramatic effect at all. Just basic mascara. Doesnt smudge though throughout the day, so I didnt give it a 1 star for that.
