Haunting, beautifully-written
I had heard Alice Hoffman recommended as one of the best writers around. . .and I can see why. In this fairly short, very simply and beautifully written novel-marketted as Young Adult but appropriate for almost anyone with a soul-Hoffman doesn't put a foot wrong. Green, the central character, is left to fend for herself when her parents and sister go off to the city one day and get swallowed up in some horrendous disaster. Society itself breaks down-teenagers roam around, half-starved, often drunk, traumatized, making do as best they can. Green has the company of one dog, a dog that was really her sister's. Then she encounters a ghostly white dog who follows her home, then a boy who has lost the power of speech. It's an engrossing read. It reminded me in some respects of Peter Dickinson's The Changes-the once-familiar landscape turned anarchic by things beyond one's control, and how peope cope(or fail to cope) in that landscape. Highly recommended. I'm off to read some more Alice Hoffman.

Beautiful book
This is a wonderful book . This was written for a teenage reader but is so well written it would be a beautiful gift for anyone suffering loss or difficulties in life. This would help those hurt , to heal. Typical Alice Hoffman, insightful and poetical prose. A gem of a book and a little work of art.

Enchanting little read
I absolutely love Alice Hoffman's writing and this book is no exception. A modern day fairytale for both teenagers and adults alike. Its a short but sweet story that doesn't fail to draw you in to the magical, enchanting world of Green as she struggles to survive.

Perfect!
This book has become one of my all time favorites and I've added all of Alice Hoffman's books to my wishlist. It's poetic language is simply perfect. The story is essentially about a girl (Green) who loses her family in a fire and learns to cope with her pain. With vivid imagery and beautifully written language Alice Hoffman describes the changes that Green's character undergoes. Her character is very unique and well-developed. She is an incredibly likable character that I could very easily sympathize with. The magical realism adds a symbolic meaning to many elements in the novel and it is written in a way that makes the magic seem believable and normal. The animal's fashion of helping the girl and the structure of the novel makes it seem like a fairytale. A very dark and sophisticated fairytale.More than the story itself, it is the poetic language, the abundant symbolic elements, and the relistic descriptions that make this book wonderful. I definitely reccomend it to anyone!

It is best to read "Green Angel" first however; there is enough flashback thoughts to fill in the necessary original tail to continue the tail in this book.

Another Hoffman Winner
This is one of the shortest books I've read in the past few years. I was able to finish it in under two hours.

Dark and disturbing, powerful and enchanting
I have read many Alice Hoffman books and still revel in her fantastic writing style and deeply metaphoric language.
