Question 1

Does this have a true gigabit connection? One review says it can only hit 500mbit of firewall traffic.

Accepted Answer

Don't ask an engineer, ask a marketing person. If you are an engineer, you know that "1 Gbps" is actually ~941 Mbps after you subtract headers/framing/etc so no, you won't ever truly see 1 Gbps on any 1Gb NIC. It will negotiate at 1 Gb and say it's passing traffic at 1 Gbps, but that's the difference between marketing and a small technical matter of networking overhead.

The marketing answer to your question is "it depends" - upon how many rules you have, what size packets you're moving, what additional packages you may have installed.  The more rules you have, the slower every packet filtering firewall goes that relies on in kernel based networking.  So the only way to find out how fast it will go is to test it. Fortunately, Netgate has tested these systems using a well defined, standard IMIX setup. Contact the Netgate sales group to discuss your throughput requirements or take a look at the blog post (june 2019) for details prior to purchasing on Amazon.

If you want true knock-your-socks-off speed, look at the Netgate TNSR, which leverages the FD.io VPP open source project and does not rely on in-kernel based network processing.

Can I hook this up between my router and modem?

Yes you can.  This device is a router in its own right, and quite a good one, so I'm not sure why you would put it between another router and the network terminal adapter.

If you are building a DMZ for your network so that some services could live there and be accessible to the Internet and to your internal network while keeping your internal network inaccessible, such a connection scheme would make sense.  That's a pretty sophisticated approach for a home/small business network, however, and probably better addressed by using cloud providers like Google, Amazon, or Microsoft to provision the publicly-visible services.

Aside: maybe your device actually is a modem, but I'd be surprised in 2019 if that were the case ... anyway, 'terminal adapter' is the term of art that covers both modems and other network interface devices.

Does the lan interface support vlan trunking to logically split lan and dmz networks?

At this time, the SG-1100 is being manufactured in China.  By December 2019, we expect to have transitioned manufacturing successfully to Taiwan.
