Usborne My Second Reading Library 50 Books Set Collection Pack Early Level 3 and 4 and Young Reading series One : desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: A Treasure Trove for Budding Readers – Structured Progression with Minor Quirks - The Usborne My Second Reading Library 50-Book Set is an impressive collection designed to nurture young readers’ confidence and stamina. As a parent and former teacher, I purchased this set for my 6-year-old, who’s transitioning from picture books to chapter books. Here’s our experience after two months of use: **PROS:** ✅ **Structured Learning:** The set’s division into Levels 3, 4, and Young Reading Series One ensures gradual progression. The first 14 Level 3 books (e.g., classic tales like *The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs*) are perfect for building fluency, while Levels 4 and Series One introduce longer stories and chapters. ✅ **Engaging Variety:** The mix of folktales, myths, and original stories keeps kids interested. My child loved the humor in *The Dinosaur Who Lost His Roar* and the adventure in *The Minotaur*. ✅ **Boosts Independence:** The clear text, short paragraphs, and occasional illustrations empower early readers to tackle books solo. My child’s confidence skyrocketed! ✅ **Great Value:** 50 books for this price is a steal compared to buying individually. Perfect for home libraries or classroom use. ✅ **Quality Publishing:** Usborne’s reputation for educational content shines—durable covers, age-appropriate vocabulary, and thoughtful storytelling. **CONS:** ❌ **Inconsistent Illustrations:** While Level 3 books have vibrant pictures, Level 4 and Series One rely more on text. Younger kids might miss the visual engagement. ❌ **Repetitive Themes:** A few stories feel formulaic (e.g., animal-focused tales), which bored my child after a while. ❌ **Delivery Limitations:** The free UK delivery is a perk, but international buyers face high shipping costs (not clearly stated upfront). ❌ **Font Size Variability:** Some books in Series One use smaller text, which can intimidate new readers. ❌ **No Parent/Teacher Guide:** A supplementary tips sheet for guiding reading sessions would have been helpful. **Final Thoughts:** This set is a fantastic investment for parents or educators aiming to foster a love of reading. The structured levels, diverse stories, and Usborne’s trusted quality make it a standout. While the lack of visuals in advanced books and occasional repetitiveness are minor letdowns, the pros far outweigh the cons. My child now proudly declares, “I read a *chapter* book today!” **Recommend For:** Kids aged 5–8 progressing from beginner readers to independent chapter books. Ideal for home use, gifts, or classrooms. Not suited for toddlers or reluctant readers needing heavy illustration support. A 4-star literacy booster! Review: Wonderful set of books and great value for money. - What a wonderful set of books! We love the fact that they are graded by ability. Our son will choose a pink book if he's feeling lazy, a turquoise book if he's feeling like a challenge and a red book if he is being really brave. The stories are interesting and when he reads them, he doesn't really notice that he is practising his reading skills, because he is so engrossed in the tales. The phonics are introduced subtly, with a lot of repetition, which, as part of the story-line, goes unnoticed by the reader. We have already read these books over and over again without getting bored. Also quite amazing value for money.

Great book set.
I bought this book set Xmas 2019 and it's used every night still. My kids can pick 2 books every night for me to read and they pick from this set. Some classic stories in it which every child should soon, some with different versions I think tho! All in all a great gift, very good value.

Just as described but arrived bashed up :(
I've been waiting to order this set for a while now. My little ones are starting to read and I knew it would be perfect for them with all the classics from my own childhood. They are extremely pleased with their 50 new books. Books are lovely quality paper backs. 3 different levels of reading from the beginners books having a sentence a page to the higher levels having 3 or 4 sentences a page and 'chapters'. I was disappointed however that the books arrived in just a small regular amazon box with very little padding to protect the case of the books, which in the end is simple cardboard. With 50 small books inside it is heavy and it's common sense to know that the box will get hit around in transit or that it will move around inside another box without proper packaging. One side of the red outer case is split open and there is a rip on the lower side at the back as if it will split open also. I contacted the seller before they shipped it and they told me that this order was managed and shipped 100% by Amazon so I don't think I can blame the seller for this fault. Amazon; care less about selling and please take better care of the product and delivery in future.

Highly recommended collection of books
Both me and my daughter are very excited about this purchase. My daughter still needs help to read, but the stories are so interesting they keep her going for longer than her school books. The books will continue to be of use when she becomes an independent reader, and the collection covers so many classic stories. I can't imagine anyone regretting buying this collection.

Great buy for young readers
I had already purchased a year ago the “Usborne My First Library”. My daughter abosutly loved reading these little books. As her reading progressed I bought the second collection and we are not disappointed. They are well illustrated and the content/ difficulty well adapted for my 6.5 years old. She takes great pleasure in reading the books by herself and then reading them to me.

Bought these books to supplement (and hopefully improve on) the bring-home readers my son was using in class. His reading progress was slow and he wasn't engaging with the school readers. Enter these Usborne readers. What an instant improvement! The stories are pretty classic and nothing particularly epic, but there are some 'smarts' behind this collection. Firstly, all the books are roughly the same length - 46-48 pages in total. Next, each page is a full picture with two to three lines of text on each. Thirdly, it repeats some of the key words over again by reconstructing sentences in different ways to not make it obvious that it is reinforcing new words. And finally, it only uses a few of the more difficult-to-sound-out words per book so as to not overload or overwhelm. We are only now approaching the end of the first of the three sets, but reading these daily has already shown huge improvements in my son's ability and willingness (see confidence) to engage. Once we finish this set, we will look to move on to the next!

Wonderful book set. I wish I'd found Usborne books years ago. My kids have hundreds of scholastic books and they're so difficult to store in an easy way for the kids to find. This set is so neat. Great readers for K-2nd, lovely stories, and illustrations, and a really nice variety.

I love how this set is laid out for learning to read. I am working through it now with my 5 year old. While she prefers books with known characters (i.e. Hello Kitty etc), this set really does teach phonics based reading more thoroughly and effectively than the other little boxed sets we are also using. We only get through about 3 pages a day, but it's slowly getting easier.
