A child can understand math and know how to solve problems but not do well on the M-STEP simply because of how the questions are presented. For example, instead of just writing, "1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = ____", The M-STEP math test might read, "In the box below, write the sum of the following numbers: 1/4, 1/4, 1/4." Blah, blah, blah. We're not just talking about word problems - we're talking about ALL of the questions. My son got extremely frustrated with the first practice test, throwing the book and throwing fits. The second test was only slightly better. By the end, he was working through the problems smoothly. With this book, we got nearly all of the frustration and confusion out of the way before the real test that mattered. My older son is not yet a good reader, but even my younger son, who is a good reader, benefits from the practice this series of books offers. For a lot of kids, it's not enough to understand the math that's on this test. This book offers children the chance to do well on the M-STEP by familiarizing them with how the test's math questions are asked. With the help of this book, my son did very well on the M-STEP, and without it, I suspect he would not have. I cannot recommend this series highly enough.
