Super Flexible High Temperature Wire Perfect for Building Projects
I got these two 2.5 meter lengths of red and black silicone insulated wire to connect moving parts to electronic projects. The wire is very flexible with 150 fine strands of tinned copper insulated by soft silicone making it ideal for super flexible interconnects subjected to a lot of movement. The current carrying capability, 18 AWG is rated at 7A, make especially suitable for motors and solenoids. I am a little concerned about the silicone insulation at higher voltages. The cables are labelled along their length “18 AWG 200°C”, but no mention is made of voltage. The silicone is also very soft and easy to damage - stripping the wire was easy, the coating yielding easily to a sharp blade. Silicone offers good electrical insulation, but there is little mechanical protection on these wires - it is the price of flexibility. I shall be using the wire mainly for low voltage work on electronic and automotive projects, but there will be occasions when I am using 240V and even though the 340V peak value is well below the 600V mentioned in the listing I will be making sure this cable is protected from mechanical damage. For medium current interconnects on projects the cable is ideal. It is easy to bend round tight corners and the high temperature silicone allows it to be soldered without the insulation melting back. The cable is quite expensive and I would have preferred longer lengths for the price being asked, but its special properties will only be needed in certain parts of a project and it can be used sparingly.
