BRILLIANT!
This series is awesome! Scarlet and Ivy are so different but they are perfect in their own way. I'm still not very sure about something **SPOILER ALERT** Why did Rose scream when Ivy touch her on the balcony thingy????Please answer my question!Overall this book was really good. And I totally recommend it for 9+ maybe even 10+.

"One Day, a Man Came to Seren..."
This is the fourth book in the “Scarlet and Ivy” six-book series, which detail the adventures of twins Scarlet and Ivy Grey – a sort of Gothic Romance/boarding school mystery mash-up. This time around the action moves from the forbidding Rookwood School for Girls to the shores of Lake Seren, where their new school mistress is hoping to garner some good publicity for the school (the events of the last three books have resulted in an exodus of students).Scarlet and Ivy, along with their best friend Ariadne, are looking forward to some time away from the school, though the lakeside hotel has just as many mysteries as Rookwood. Items keep disappearing from the girls’ rooms, while other strange objects – a Bible, a crucifix, a candlestick – appear without explanation, and which seem to upset the hotel owners. The other students are determined to blame Rose, a young girl that lives at the boarding school without taking classes, for the occurrences and the twins are just as resolved to clear her name. For those that’ve already read the previous books, Rose is a character that’s been around for a while now, and “The Lights Under the Lake” explores her backstory at the same time the twins investigate the odd goings-on in the hotel. According to local people, there’s actually a flooded village at the bottom of Lake Seren, which may account for the ghostly lights that they glimpse in its depths…For the record, these stories are set in the 1930s, which explains the complete lack of cell-phones and the rather old-fashioned values, but not the modern colloquialisms and anachronisms. There’s really nothing in these books to ground them as a period piece – no historical context, no mentions of the outside world, and as such they feel a little lightweight. That they’re also Gothically-tinged stories also means that (much like Scooby Doo or Nancy Drew) all the seemingly supernatural events have a rational explanation behind them – even if said explanations strain your credulity.Obviously I’m outside the target audience of “Scarlet and Ivy”, and I started reading them because the books are so popular at the library I work at. They’re fun and light and will appeal to young readers (especially those who enjoy a spooky mystery), though I wish some of the plotting was a bit tighter and the contrivances less silly. But Scarlet and Ivy have strong narrative voices (the chapters switch between their points-of-view) and make for great heroines: brave, loyal and determined.

An 8YO's dream of punchy, pacy story telling
My 2 girls (10&8) absolutely adore this series. In her own words, my 8YO was particularly impressed that there was no "love stuff".The story is punchy, engaging, and pacy, with some lovely cliffhangers that means both my kids come hammering downstairs to update us and beg for the next book. For a bedtime read there hasn't been a series in our house this addictive for some time!

Enjoyable Fourth Instalment
A gripping read from cover to cover where the mystery takes place away from Rockwood School. The twins thirst for mysteries and search for the truth is admirable. I love the depth in the story and the way the characters are built. a sheer enjoyment to read, this book is not only suitable for kids but I believe adults will thoroughly enjoy reading this book too. A highly recommended 5 star read.

A book for 9 yr olds- not my taste
When the summary of the book mentioned that it was like Harry Potter I was intrigued and bought the first few books. The plot seemed interesting and had lots of potential (I mean a creepy story about a missing twin- what could go wrong?) however the writing was simple and not one bit like Harry Potter which I found quite annoying! The series just went downfall from the first book and I soon found out that the writing was intended for younger readers which was quite irritating as I am 12 years old. The writing was not creepy at all and I am quite sad that I bought the first 4 books of the series- what a waste of money and time!I cannot force myself to read the rest of the series, it was terribly tedious just to plough through the 3rd and 4th book, therefore I will rate this book 2 stars as I feel guilty of just rating it 1. It is quite sad and infuriating to see many good reviews as I thoroughly expected this book to be a very good read. Despite the amazing 5 star reviews this book is not a page-turner and the main characters are shallow and not developed enough for my taste. Perhaps I am being too harsh after reading other detective/thriller books.I do not recommend this book for readers of Harry Potter and I do not think the book is a thriller. It is probably suited for younger readers who get scared easily. There is weak, bland detective air to this book. I am upset for buying this book :(
