Mummy Laid An Egg! : Cole, Babette: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Hilarious and clever! - Mummy Laid an Egg! is an absolutely delightful book that turns a typically awkward topic into something fun, silly, and totally approachable. The humor is spot-on, and kids love the playful illustrations and goofy explanations adults give in the story. It’s a brilliant twist that the children end up being the ones who “explain how things really work,” making it both funny and empowering. What really stands out is how Babette Cole handles the subject matter with such lightheartedness. There’s nothing heavy or uncomfortable - just creative drawings, lots of giggles, and a gentle nudge toward honest conversation. It’s a fantastic choice for parents who want an age-appropriate, engaging way to start talking about where babies come from. Fun to read, beautifully illustrated, and memorable in all the best ways. A true five-star gem! Review: Explained with fun and laughter ! - Bought this book for my 7 year old daughter who had been asking questions about "Where do babies come from?" - and I didn't want to fob her off. This book tells children the biological truth to their question in a fun way with great illustrations and provokes some laughter in the process. If you don't want to lie to your children but don't want to frighten them either - this is a great book. Have recommended it to friends with children of the same age. Being truthful with your child at this age and on this subject in particular is so very important and means they can ask open questions without feeling that the subject is taboo or dirty in some way. Babette Cole's books are a joy and I highly recommend them

Clear and well presented!
Great book ! Clearly telling story of why Mummy and Daddy do what happens and how everything works without details that would be inappropriate for the age group! Children cope with the truth and this book allows adults to be adults and explore with their children how and when they are doing something together that happens naturally and should be explained properly. Words and pictures simple yet effective but you need to answer questions that come from reading this honestly and as an adult. Its not a giggly nonsense..it happens and children often hear more about everything at school because parents seem incapable of explaining what happens together when adults love each other etc etc ! This wont allow you to hide behind false truths...tell them and accept they then know what is going on!

Great for under 10's.
We have older boys, (7 and 9) neither of which have ever showed the slightest interest in questioning their origins! I have always felt they should be given the truth, up to whatever is appropriate for their age, and wanted them to ask - but as the oldest boy was approaching his year 5 'health education' dvd and still hadn't asked questions we needed to push the point, as we wanted to make sure he heard from us, not school. So I bought this and another book aimed at older children. This book is aimed at younger kids but my 9 year old enjoyed laughing at it, once he knew the truth. We used it as a conversation starter and it worked as he then started asking questions... it is a funny book which lays out some 'myths' about where babies come from. And then follows it up with some facts, but in a very well presented format for younger children. I would say children from about 4 upwards would be OK for this book - and beyond as we have proved. My boys just laughed at the far-fetched 'myths' section and then accepted the ending without any worrying questions. This is ideal as the older boy subsequently asked appropriate questions, the younger has filed it away until he gets to Y5.... I would recommend to parents who are looking to break the news to their offspring.

Brilliant - bought for 7 year old, fun and extremely helpful!
I really didn't know how to address my 7 year old daughters questions and I really wish I would have just told her when she was ALOT younger. I had told her how the baby comes out of my belly when she was about 4 years old because she had asked and that was the end of that but I think because I had waited so long with these questions it all got a bit awkward and embarrassing. I bought Hair In Funny Places, Where Willy Went and Mummy Laid An Egg and she read them in that order. We all sat down, me, her daddy and her 15 year old sister and she read the books aloud and giggled and laughed and looked confused all the way through. She then asked tons of questions and we went through the books again and that was that. I honestly don't know how I would have done it without these books, she's asked for further books as she still doesn't understand how the baby grows from nothing and where the baby gets it 'bones and hair' from so she is still a bit confused but loves reading the books as she said that she has learned so much. 5 stars! ---> *****

Just what I needed to help with those awkward questions!
This was recommended to me by a friend when my five year old started asking lots of questions. I like to be honest with my girls aged 3 & 5 but didn't know quite how to tell them the 'whole truth' in a child friendly way. I thought this book was ideal. An amusing, light hearted story with funny pictures. Some reviews mention the page where the mummy and daddy 'fit together' and I would agree it's not for everyone but my eldest questions everything and had a few sleepless nights wondering how the seed gets to the egg. The standard 'magic cuddle' answer wasn't enough for her! I read this book to both my girls one bedtime then left it for them to look at on their own. I haven't had any other questions yet although my 3 year old was overheard explaining to her 2 year old cousin that he can't have babies in his tummy because 'you got the bits with the seeds in' so she obviously listened well.

great
I bought this book as my 6 year old daughter was asking questions that i was not entirely sure how to answer. The questions were related more towards lady bits and changes, and after the flummoxed response of "its nothing for you to worry about" and the realization that my little girl was growing up, she replied "I think when i ask you a question, you should give me an answer". I cracked up laughing and decided that if she is old enough to ask the questions, she is old enough for an age appropriate answer, so I hit the net and discovered there is relevant literature available and I ordered three books in total. This book is by far the best. Although it refers more towards sex than body parts and changes, it provided a good basis in which to expand. I must say, I prepared myself for the discussion and it really was not necessary. We read through the book together and we laughed together (with the addition of my four year old daughter chuckling at the pictures asking if mummy and daddy have a skateboard). The book is on their bookcase for whenever we want to read it again, however, since reading it, she seems to have lost interest and not asked any more qhwstions. job well done I say!

A fabulous book for open minded easy going people
A fabulous book for open minded easy going people. Definitely not for those who are prudes or think that sex is something that shouldn't be fun. I read it to my kids and they howled laughing at the bits that even I wondered if they were a step too far. I'm obviously becoming a fuddy duddy in my old age because the kids weren't shocked or harmed in any way. Instead it lightened the mood in what can be a difficult subject to broach with the children. Yes it is graphic. Yes it is irreverant. Like it should be. Buy it!
