Lesson for the new generation of artists
I gave it 5 stars because this film shows that having talent is not enough if you do not know what you are doing and you are out of control.Furthermore, if you let yourself be controlled by people like Shaun Ryder, no matter how popular he is, we will bring you down in the end.Factory records could have become the EMI of the north.I am surprised and glad that New Order survived this car crash in the music businessI have 2 young daughters, who are still studying and will likely go into artistic things. I would show them this film, as a lesson of what NOT to do but I hesitate because of all the drug taking 'and stuff'.

Manic, Funny, Sad and Enthrawling....Brilliant.
I'd not seen this film originally, but a friend recommended it and I wasn't disappointed as I grew up in this era and went to the Hacienda in Manchester in the mid 80's.Steve Coogan does a great job of portraying Tony Wilson and manages to capture the humour, madness and eccentric nature of the business from start to finish. From his appearances on Granada to his dealings with bands that go on to have huge success, there is an almost frantic madness, coupled with a passion and enjoyment that kept me enthralled throughout the film. The portrayal of Joy Division and especially Ian Curtis (well played IMO by Sean Harris) is graphic, clever and intense. You certainly get a feel for the music of the time, as well as the scene in Manchester. If you're thinking of watching this film, do so.

Worth Watching Again
One good aspect of these Covid 19 lockdowns is it gives a chance to watch films again you probably wouldn't normally get the opportunity to see for a second time.I am really glad that, around 15 or 16 years after I originally watched '24 Hour Party People', I have seen it again. I think the first time I saw this I thought it was ok but glib and tried to hard to be comic. I also think that, originally, I probably spent too much time picking holes in the chronological chaos and unsubstantiated or outright inaccurate plot devices and also trying to pick out who was who in the story. However, watching it now as a film about a time, place a man and bands I found it really enjoyable and also quite funny. It certainly kept me entertained.I should also say that Steve Coogan who really the film depends upon as he is in every scene is really good as Tony Wilson. He certainly sounds like Wilson and his mannerisms are very good. Unfortunately, because of Alan Partridge it is hard to separate Partridge from Coogan and therefore Wilson.Apart from that watch this film for a close representation of a period (or two periods) of music history, for the music itself and for a quite humorous film that is entertaining.

Shame it wasn't better produced
great era aahhhh the memories. But this film does not do it justice. It's all over the place it makes no sense it's a Mish mash of only half of the hasienda story and not very well put over by Steve coogan.

One of my favourite films.
Having grown up with Tony Wilson on the telly, I was pleased to see that Coogan captured his personality perfectly. The whole film is slightly "tongue in cheek" with elements of fantasy, but the story is mostly accurate and very entertaining. The set of The Hacienda is recreated perfectly, the character portrayals are excellent and the whole film is a fun and nostalgic trip.

A great british film
One of my favourite films - smart, sad and very, very funny. If you're interested in the history of the Manchester music scene or even if you're not I cannot recommend this film enough. Brilliant.

One of the best musical biopics - ever. Now finally on bluray! Play Loud!
MVD Blu-ray. Looks and sounds better than ever. Subtitled in English, French and Spanish.LOTS of bonus features: one with Steve Coogan and one with Tony Wilson ( primary subject of film). A few featurettes, a dozen deleted scenes and more.Directed by Michael Winterbottom and photographed by the late Robby Mueller, who's worked with Alex Cox, Bogdanovich, Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders and many other greats.Cool cameos by the late Mark E. Smith (The Fall), Howard Devoto (The Buzzcocks) and many more. The story of Factory Records is a comedy of errors (the money losing Blue Monday 12"), wanton bullishness over professionalism (the Joy Division contract giving them the right to 'f*** off' written in label boss Tony Wilson's blood) and a series of successful accidents (the initially cash hemorrhaging club Hacienda). With all the above situations then it made total sense for Steve Coogan to take control of telling the story as the label’s head protagonist, Tony Wilson. Releasedi n 2002, 24 Hour Party People is based on Factory Records legends; some real, some not, but why let the whole truth gets in the way of a good story?A surprise hit considering the majority of the big bands on the label, although deeply influential, could hardly be considered part of the mainstream. Joy Division had one minor hit in Ian Curtis' lifetime, Happy Mondays had a handful and New Order only had one chart-topping single, that being a god-awful football song. The star of the show is of course Steve Coogan as Tony Wilson; he portrays the endearing but pretentious mannerisms of Tony Wilson perfectly as Paddy Considine shines as a particularly unpredictable Rob Gretton. The film, like Factory’s existence is in three thirds; the depressing monotone Manchester is a backdrop for big ideas for a little city, slowly morphing into optimism cut short by THAT suicide. (As the film has it, Ian Curtis was watching Werner Herzog's Stroszek - complete with the dancing chicken.)The middle; New Order and Happy Mondays ruling the charts, the Hacienda running Manchester nightlife and ecstasy making previously repressed Northerners love one another. If you experienced the Hacienda at its heights you’ll be forgiven for thinking that they used footage of the actual place in the film as it was that realistic. The final third is the messy fall of the empire; the success of the Hacienda caught the inevitable attention of the dodgy dealers and gangsters wanting a piece of the pie as Tony Wilson’s drug addiction culminated in the closure of Factory and The Hacienda as bands failed to provide decent albums. Regular appearances of guns in the club ended up with regular closures until it did so for good. Factory’s legacy lives on in Hacienda Heights, luxury city centre apartments and Manchester has Factory to thank for its current thriving city status.A hit, mainly because of the story of success over tragedy, a brilliant soundtrack (what, no Northside?), hilarious throughout and one of the best music based films of all time.
