The entire mini-series (based on the best-selling novel by Colleen McCullough) following the fortunes of the Cleary family, whose lives are touched by a seemingly unalterable destiny. The story spans generations and continents and deals with the relationship between an ambitious priest (Richard Chamberlain) and a young woman (Rachel Ward). It includes both the "Thorn Birds The Missing Years" as well as the whole "Thorn Birds mini series". Review: Love and manipulation - Excellent DVD set. Complete and worth the money Review: Thornbirds - I didn’t watch this in the ‘80’s so lovely to view this movie now

An Epic story of forbidden love
Was obsessed with this show back in the 80’s! It’s been many years since I’ve seen it so decided to purchase it and have enjoyed watching it again every bit as much as before! Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward absolutely devour the screen and I’ve really loved a new appreciation for characters like Fee and Mary and Anne and Justine ! It’s an epic saga and a truly tragic story ! So glad I have it to watch again and again

You must see this in your life time.
Perfect production! Authentic, passing values and messages that are universal to humanity and acted beautify and very skilfully. They do not make productions like that anymore.

The original series is ....Magical!
I was in my mid teens when this originally came out and I remember being transfixed by it then. My husband bought me this box set for my Christmas and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the original 1983 episodes. The acting is beautiful and the tension and passion between the central characters makes for compelling viewing. It's is most thought provoking storyline and the script is well written. There are a few parts which are rather fanciful but by far the last 2 DVDs are the best of the set. The love affair is so sensitively and believable acted. Yes it's 30 years ago since it was made and some of the make-up, hair and costumes appear "dated" by today's standards especially as the characters age, but in many ways this is part of the charm of the original. The box set came with an additional DVD called "The Thorn Birds the Missing Years". I decided to watch this last night and wished I hadn't- dire... Nothing about this does justice to the original, so many inaccuracies. This should never have been made... With the exception of Richard Chamberlain the acting is very wooden. It more like watching a cheaply done and very long ( nearly 3 hours) episode of Dallas. Watch and get lost in the twists and turns of the beautifully done and iconic original " Thorn Birds' but when the box set arrives don't waste time on The Missing Years... They add nothing, could almost detract from the box set so keep them missing!

“You’ll see green when the rains come…if they come” (Pete)
This 5 disc hard case covers the original 1983 miniseries (4 discs) and 1996 -The Missing Years (1 disc). An ambitious young priest, Ralph de Bricassart, finds himself banished to an enormous sheep station, Drogheda, in New South Wales, Australia at the end of WWI, where he attracts the attention of Mary Carson, a manipulative and lecherous wealthy aging widow who always gets what she wants. When Mary’s brother, Paddy, arrives at Drogheda with his family, Ralph soon takes the delicate 10 year old? Meggie under his protective wing. But as Mary’ jealousy increases who is correct in their world view? And is Mary right when she questions Ralphs commitment to God or will he succumb to the lure of money or sins of the flesh? -or perhaps both. Covering a period from the end of WWI to the end of the 60s and being an historical miniseries, this stands the test of time remarkably well. Characters are generally black & white, good or bad, (and very few are actually likeable) but the acting avoids the theatrical style that plagues many 70s and 80s productions but does get weaker as the episodes progress. The discs basically cover a televised episode each (including black screen advert break slots) and offer play, scene selection and languages (spoken: English, Francais, Italiano. Subtitles: the same with Nederlands, Deutsch, Castellano and some hard of hearing choice). Play on disc 1 leads into a trailer that gives the entire story so don’t watch it (lose a *). This plays in TV 3:4 format so a widescreen will have grey bars down the sides. I’d expected to mark the original down, but criticisms are minor and it has stood the time test and is still gripping. The later 1996 follow up: the Missing Years, (actually only about 1-2 years?) has a number of glaring plot inconsistencies when viewed back to back (lose a *) and characters have differing personalities (lose a*) -did the writers even see the original, let alone read it? As a stand alone it would be a decent **** drama but not as part of the Thorn Birds. Treat the single disk as a separate movie, an alternate reality or wait ten years before viewing.
