Is this box bug and ant proof?

We use ours inside the house and have no issues with it. I would say for outside use it's possible for bugs to get in though especially ones like ants.

Is this able to be painted?

I would think so. It is shiny so you would probably do well to sand it first so paint would stick better.

The (customer) photo on the box shows the knob on top while the Amazon photo shows the knob on the botto. Can the breadbox be used in either position?

I have been using it with the knob on the bottom like the picture but when I looked at it just now and turned it over the "top" was not flat and looked more like a top. I had thought that the box opening from the bottom was a bit inconvenient. Now it works much better. To answer the question....I think it is made to have the knob on the top. But it works both ways.

Can you store unwrapped homemade bread in this?

I only store wrapped breads, rolls etc. it doesn't appear to be air tight to store unwrapped items
