what material filament do you recommmend for teenagers due to ... smells, odors, VOCs, is anything available environmentally friendly?

PLA produces very little odor and is a plant-based bioplastic.

what temp does it run at?

210 C for ABS and 190 C for PLA

What size filament does this require?

This uses standard 1.75mm ABS and PLA.

I can’t get the filament to dry in time for on-the-air drawing. How can I draw upwards and make a joint?

Well for me I just held it in place... it just hangs there from the tip of the pen and you have to pull it tight. But, after about five/six seconds it should harden enough to pull the pen away and you have a verticle line. But, my brother has a desk fan set up that he has turned towards his work and said it works well. You just have to make sure the fan isn't too close and bends the plastic. But, you shouldn't have an issue getting verticle lines if you just hold it in place for a few seconds.
