Shackleton's Journey

WOW! What an amazing book. The illustrations are beautiful, the way the story is told is great. I found it so fascinating it left me going away researching more about Shackleton's journey and his crew. I loved all the tiny details in the illustrations that were added into it as well; things like certain people who became well known for catching penguins, or those who were stowaways. It's suitable for adults or older children alike - anyone will like this book really. This is obviously a very well researched and beautiful thought out book. I can not WAIT to get William Grill's next book.

Lovely book, story and illustrations. It is a large format. There is a lot of detail in all the drawings.

This is a very different book. There isn't a huge amount of text yet it is written succinctly, in an interesting fashion and is informative. The illustrations are fantastic and convey the vastness of the sea, the expanse of snow and ice and how difficult it must have been. They really couldn't fail to fire up imagination. One reviewer has said this would appeal to anyone from 6 to 106 and I totally agree. I bought this for a present for my 6 year old godson who is fascinated by explorers and at the same time my 87 year old aunt described this as a "wonderful book" which reminded her of facts that she had forgotten. Excellent book.

My 10-year-old son is reading this book at primary school in his English lessons. However, due to lockdown, he's been reading it online with the class and as a result, he's struggling to see much of the text and the illustrations. So, we decided it would be nice to have an actual physical copy. I'm so glad that we bought this because it is absolutely gorgeous and needs to be appreciated up close. But, most importantly, my son loves this - both story and illustrations, and getting hold of the physical book has spurred him on to steam ahead in these English lessons! As a parent, I am also going to have a read of this, because it is just such an attractive and compelling book. So well-recommended.

If you are obsessed by Shackleton and the golden age of Antarctic exploration (don't worry, you are not alone), this is a good one to give to your 8-12 year old child in order to share and explain your condition. Short texts and lively illustrations tell the Endurance story in brief.

The book is great with lots of information and images. The only thing that lets it down is the writing print is very small. I feel the writing needs to be bigger to engage the kids, although the pictures are really helpful, you want the kids to be part of the reading process and if they see writing like this, it bores them. Younger kids for sure. But will give it a go as it is a topic they will be learning at school when they return after the summer

It's hard to decide whether the story or the illustrations are the best part of this book. The pencil drawings are brilliant. No question that the artist presses down hard when he works and the result is stunning. They would make wonderful posters and wallpaper. The story is simply and nicely told....a book to read again and again. A pleasure.

Great read and amazing artwork to look at with the kids.

This book is extremely informative without being too lengthy. The language is precise and academic with supporting illustrations that read more like diagrams and infographics than narrative story illustrations. The illustrations provide a lot of information about the expedition members, supplies, and what it must have been like to explore during this time period. I would recommend this to 3rd graders and up. An excellent choice for building up the non-fiction library in your classroom or home. After reading this book, the kids were very excited to see the black and white photos taken during this expedition which are easily found online.
