How do you get it to open? there is no latch on the 1424bn that i can see and it is stuck closed.

There is a cam (or maybe you might call it a jam) just to the left of center bolt the two sides pivot on. Look for it on the side without the shiny chromed nuts. You might need to lightly compress the grip to release the cam which will need to be swung out of the way away from the pivot bolt manually.

Do you have to have the silicone on the wire when crimping or will it work without it?

If you're talking about the little boot that keeps water out, then would say no, you don't need it. I was putting mine on as it was going under the truck.

Will this work for 150 & 280 series terminals with square ends not round.

If you read the description of the tool it specifically says it is for the weather pack terminal. There is a set that has all the adapters to do all terminals. Look for that set.

will the 1424bn crimp 12ga it says it crimps 24- 14 ga ?

24-14 means 24-14. 14 is tight.
