Oxford Modern English Grammar

This is an incredibly comprehensive guide to English grammar as it is used. Covers everything from the basics of sentence structure and verb use, to some really complex advanced topics. Note: The book explicitly states that this is a guide to how English is USED, not how it is supposed to be used. If you are buying a guide to make sure your writing is correct, I suggest a different book. Invaluable for learners of English.

English grammar is not easy, so if you need to learn grammar or just improve your reading/writing skills, you need a really good course or book. You need to examine a lot of different options to make a good choice, but not all of them include morphology (nor syntax) which is a basic, and today's different grammar theories make it more difficult and confusing. The Oxford Modern English Grammar doesn't miss any basics, it's easy to understand, and it clears any possible confusion as you read, so you can learn grammar without a teacher. I had difficulties in Transformational generative grammar mainly for builiding three diagrams but i bought this grammar not for helping me at this aspect, it was bought for further Reading in fact, it is helping me to undestand the three diagram because it illustrates the class of each phrase in a sentence, buy it now...

Good one: before reading this book,all I had was traditional grammar from middle school teacher. This is a new way to analyze English language. Also the description is quite clear. Poor editing(kindle version): double underlined does not appear even once. Some border do not appear. Some sequences number is not correct. Sorry for my grammar of this comment , it is a hurrying version from my poor English.

Very detailed and accurate. Not a comic-like version. A classical grammar book. For middle-high schoolers as well as college students.

Don't buy the kindle version. I made that mistake and now I am stuck with it. The kindle version has issues with lists, tables, and sidebars. It doesn't show the complete pages as in a physical book which distracts from reading the actual content and makes it feel fragmented. The book has a lot of good new information but it is not readable: there is no flow. It is full of definitions, lists, etc. I recommend another advanced more readable book, "A Student's Introduction to English Grammar" by Huddleston and Pullmum. Even though it has student in the title but it is actually an advanced book based on the new Cambridge's Grammar by the same authors.

Excellent book to start with

An excellent electronic copy of this popular Oxford Modern English Dictionary. Great search functions with Amazon's free Kindle app for both Apple and Android smartphones and Ipads. The explanations are great. Worth every penny.

This book is perfect. Learning grammar isn't funny for foreigners, but this book makes it quite easy to understand the English grammar and helps a lot to feel more secure... It seems to be "complete", which means that the authors didn't forget anything according to the explanations. I don't use the book to learn actively, I use it to look something up whenever I'm not sure how to use a tense or a form... and it works perfectly. I highly recommend it to all of you!
