Outstanding album! Book makes it the complete package. Well worth the price!
The modern day Maiden is a six piece complex machine of sound. This album has a lot of epics, with elongated instrumental sections. The album is not the fast, to the point, album like Killers. As with the albums of the last 20 years the band is telling long stories while showcasing their playing. It's an excellent album. The deluxe edition with the book rounds out the experience. The drums sounds fantastic. Adrian's guitar stands out, much like it does on Somewhere In Time. This helps with the contrast against Dave and Jan's guitar work. Steve's bass isnt as present here as on other albums. Bruce sounds strong on this album. The mix is very good. The downside is there are a lot of keyboards. They are subtle on most albums but they are constant on this album. They sit there one or two notes at a time but they play throughout. The tunes:Senjutsu - An excellent song. I loved the lyrics and guitars on this one. This is your concert opener.Stratego - My least favorite track. It's short and to the point but it isn't catchy for my tastes. The guitar work is very good on this one. It is definitely fast. The Writing on the Wall - An elongated Adrian Smith solo makes this song extra special. This is an excellent tune.Lost in a Lost World - Bruce uses a vocal effect on the intro. Very moody in the beginning, good pick up in the middle. A tune that picks up as it goes. Excellent solos.Days of Future Past - Another Adrian classic. His sounds overpowers this song. Excellent track. The Time Machine - A very catchy tune. This one tells a great story in the lyrics with a great hook. I immediately found this to stand out probably because of its place on the album but it is a great track. Had a Dance of Death vibe in the middle. Excellent closer for the first disc.Darkest Hour - An epic that is heavy. Bruce soars on this with Adrian playing under him. Steve and Nicko are THUD, THUD, THUD which makes this such a deep tune.Death of the Celts - A great solo and instrumental section in the middle. Not a clone of the Clansman as it lacks that big chorus. Too much keyboards on the intro but when the song heats up it's sad and filled with death. Solid tune. The Parchment - This one has a long instrumental at the beginning and it is heavy. Then another extended section in the middle. It reminds me a lot of The Book of Souls title track. I can see this being a hidden gem down the road that gets lost between Celts and Hell.Hell On Earth - fast and to the point. Great album closer. Reminds me of the Thin Line Between Love and Hate or a faster When the Wind Blows. Bruce digs deep on this one. Excellent closer. If you are a fan of the band's catalog you will find plenty to love here. It's an excellent album. If you find that you don't like Brave New World, Dance of Death, A Matter of Life and Death, The Final Frontier or The Book of Souls then Powerslave and Number of the Beast are there waiting for you to re-listen to. This band isn't the band of the 80s. They have evolved.
