How is this product safer for the environment? Still goes in the land I'll right?

It doesn’t go down the drain to clog your city’s drainage. Most cities have a campaign to eliminate FOG ( fats grease and oils) to not be poured down the sink even with hot water and soap It won’t hurt your homes pipes but the city’s.

Why not just get a funnel and pour your old oil in a soda bottle or anything with a lid? Do these products cost more than the fresh oil you purchased?

That's a cheaper choice, for sure, but if you do that, the plastic bottle isn't recyclable. Using stuff like this, you can throw away the oil without putting it in a container. This type of oil solidifier is the most common way to throw away oil in countries like Japan!

how would this work for motor oil ?

I don't know if this would solidify motor oil but I wouldn't do it because motor oil is toxic and full of chemical additives that I wouldn't want to trow into the land fill. Better to recycle it through a municipal system or your regular gas station/auto repair where it has a chance of being re-distilled into usable oil.
