This book is a "stand alone" guide in many ways. The details go on and on, and I confess I haven't read it from cover to cover. But in picking out certain topics, I can see that this author knows their stuff, and more importantly knows how to convey information in a straight forward matter-of-fact manner. It's one thing to know it for yourself and it's quite another to be able to convey that to someone else. I haven't watched the DVD but I look forward to delving into this level of sewing for haute couture. The diagrams in this book are clear, and self explanatory. It clearly shows various stitches for hand sewing and various techniques for stitching hand worked button holes. I highly recommend this information ONLY if you are ready to go into a much deeper commited level (if not time consuming)of sewing. I think it is its OWN REWARD. Review: Fine Tailoring Sewing Paperback - Fast Shipping. Excellent packaging. Very Fine paperback Tailoring Book. Wonderful instruction. Made Buttonholes easier!

Another Claire Shaeffer Winner!
This book and accompanying DVD are awesome. The are abundant pictures and the directions are clear and concise. This book focuses in on specific areas of tailoring and details those areas precisely. They are buttonholes, patch pockets, interfaced hems, converting darts to ease, tailored sleeves, fly zipper closure and measuring for trouser hems. The final chapter takes a look at what are the characteristics of a couture garment. Another superb book from Clair Shaeffer to add to your collection .

like all of Claire's books are a must-have for your ...
Claire has become my new sewing-heroine. I still adore Nancy Zieman, but Claire definitely kicks it up a notch. This book, like all of Claire's books are a must-have for your sewing library. I got it from the library for a while and renewed it as long as I could. Finally I just ordered my own copy because I knew I couldn't go on sewing without it. It's so full of information and illustration you won't be able to retain it all.

couture sewing
Several technics are shown, if you are an advanced sewer, there is probably not very much new to you. But is nicely ranged and organised and clearly explaned with a lot pictures. The book has 6 chapters, buttonhole, patch pockets, interfaced hems, darts and sleeves, trousers and caracteristics of couture construction. The actual book is not very thick it has (only) 81 pages, then there is an appendix of about 30 pages were she repeats a lot (not everything), which she just explaned in the first part of the book only this thime with drawings. The book comes with an DVD, I have to admit that I did not had the time to look at it.. so I cannot give any comment on that.

great book
Claire Shaeffer did it again. She produced a beautiful book, showing some of the finest tailoring I have ever seen. The photographs are clear, and the DVD shows the techniques in real time. I can't wait for the next book, chanel Jackets, to arrive.

The book is brand new. Well packed. Claire, no longer with us, is a great loss to the art of sewing . Every perfect page evokes her gentle voice and her wise words. Vale Claire Schaffer.

This book has an excellent DVD clearly showing all the wonderful couture techniques. The book then has photos as reminders of what is detailed on the DVD and good narrative instructions as reminders. Claire Shaeffer explains it all very well. I am very much a novice (been sewing just a few months), but I'm a quick learner and my first garment was a fitted shirt. I was so pleased with this book that I have just ordered Claire's other book on sewing a Chanel style jacket which I am keen to start. I have already started doing so much more basting and hand finishing since I read this book instead of jumping straight on the machine. I recommend this book to a sewer at any level. It's for someone who is more interested in getting a professional finish rather than finishing something super-quick. I can't wait for her book on the couture skirt to come out next year.
